 "Obviously...not beta tested." 2010-05-27
By John P. Krug (USA)
I was originally enthusiastic. A duplexing autofeed scanner was what I had been searching for. The scanner looks and functions great. Unfortunately, the software is the problem....and a big problem. There seems to be no way of avoiding the software and simply using the scanner to its full potential (ie. duplex, varying contrast, dpi etc.). Within 4 hours I was at the point of tears. There is NO SUPPORT to be found. If the only thing you scan are receipts, then it might work for you. If you want to organize general documents etc. stay clear of this one.

"Great little scanner for a crowded desk" 2010-05-18
By Chris Hickman (Sierra Vista, AZ)
I purchased one of these scanners from a local office supply store to try it. I liked the design of the gravity feed without the drum wrap around on most sheet fed scanners. It feeds from the bottom, so scanning stacks of documents that were stapled or paperclipped (with wrinkled corners at the top of the document from this) is a snap. The writing speed from scanner to the computer is a little sluggish, but the queue holds quite a bit before it binds on you. I do not need, nor use the included software for organizing scans, only need the quick scan function (recommend you disable opening the files after creating as this really slows the thing down). I have a real estate office and only need to scan contracts to put into online transaction management system and/or email to agents/clients. After trying out the one unit for a couple weeks without major issues, I bought three more for my office staff to alleviate the traffic jam at our media room copier/scanner to do the same job. I will likely buy more as the need arises.

 "NO SUPPORT FOR NEATWORKS" 2010-05-18
By History Buff
There is no telephone support offered for its products by The Neat Company. The offered email support is illusory. Repeated emails to Support elicit only automatic replies which are little more than an acknowledgement of receipt. The website and knowledge base are useless as they are not intuitive and offer no search function. The NeatWorks software will install on some Vista operating systems without a problem and fail on other Vista operating system. With the failures you are out of luck because there is no support.

 "Complete Waste of Time" 2010-05-11
By Christine Springer (Phoenix, Arizona)
I ordered this product directly from the Neat website. I received it on a Saturday, couldn't install it, and there was no telephone number to call to ask for help. I sent an e-mail through the website, and did not receive a response until Tuesday. Their support response did not resolve the issue and on Wednesday I decided to return it. I might be asking too much for something like a scanner to work right out of the box, but I wasted several hours of time messing around with failed installations and days waiting for a technical support response. It's not worth the trouble.

 "Wonderful" 2010-05-25
By M. Fanelli (Perryville, MD USA)
Call me totally impressed! I have used the TI-83/84 calculators for years but rarely the advanced features they offered. I often found them to obscure and annoying. The Nspire takes a powerful document approach that is totally different than the Ti 83/84 series.

This Nspire CAS Touchpad is quite a revelation. It took me all of an hour to understand (with the Dummies book at my side) almost all the functions it offers. The keypad is clear and obvious unlike the first versions of the Nspire. I was amazed at how much I could do with this device with so little effort. I have been using Mathematica for many of the classes I teach. The Nspire can replace Mathematica for most of the things we do in undergraduate physics and engineering courses. That is impressive.

The large screen is a bonus. The characters are clear with high resolution. The large screen means that everything you do is easier to see and analyze. The screen is adjustable but it is still a calculator screen. You need light to see it well as it is not backlit like LCD computer monitors.

Some people compare the Nspire with the Ti-89. Sorry, no contest. This Inspire runs rings around the Ti-89, a calculator I never really liked. It is faster, easier to use and read, and a joy to use. Don't waste your time with the TI-89. Putting a little time in learning the Nspire paradigm will reward you.

The Nspire comes with desktop software that duplicates the functions of the calculator. On a MacBook Pro, it installed right away without problems. There is a link included with the software that allows you to backup and update the Nspire as well as move files back and forth.

The Nspire links up with the Venier Go! and EasyLink sensors. I haven't tried this yet but will in the next week or so. We have LabPros and LabQuests for our classes, but it will be fun to try the Nspire anyway.

I have not been so impressed with a calculator since my very first HP-15C too many years ago. It's even more impressive than my first professional slide rule! I very rarely gush about a product, but this device is something I have been looking for a very long time.

 "Much improved" 2010-05-17
By Coastie
This calculator has amazing capabilities. It far exceeds TI's old computer-based "Derive" software. The new touchpad is a big improvement over the old one--no more accidentally hitting alpha keys instead of numeric keys. The scratchpad in the latest version of the operating system is a big plus. On the downside, you still need to use on-line tutorials or a book such as "TI Nspire for Dummies" to figure out the features, even if you are very familiar with the TI-83/84 series.

 "Great Improvement!" 2010-05-10
By Daniel Rosales (Orlando, FL, USA)
This is much better than the TI-nspire CAS because it is much easier to enter numbers and variables. I always made mistakes on the old nspire and I'm really glad I got this one. When using graphs it allows you to use a pointer like you would on a computer using a touchpad.

Pros: design, data entry

Cons: bulky

"Easy to use and excellent for scanning pictures" 2010-03-18
By liat2768 (dallas)
I've had this product for a few months now and could not be more pleased with it. I have used it for its main purpose - to scan in documents, business cards, receipts, etc- and it is an excellent little machine and very simple to use. It does duplex scanning (both sides of the paper at once), the software includes handwriting recognition and converts it into type (OCR) and also includes a Carrier sheet for scanning pictures.

What I am finding it most useful for, though, is for scanning in our many hundreds of family pictures that we have from before the arrival of digital cameras. Surviving only in hard copy (and most of them without negatives) it is finally easy to scan, email and share these pictures. I had tried using a flatbed scanner but it was tedious and time consuming. With this machine I can put all the pictures from an album into a neat little pile on the feeder and the machine scans them very very quickly. The owner's guide recommends using the Carrier sheet for scanning pictures but I have scanned hundreds without it and have not seen any signs of damage to the machine or to the pictures. I'm using Picasa to sort and load the pictures onto my computer and this part of the process does take a fairly long time. However, this may be an issue with Picasa and not the machine itself. The quality of the pictures is excellent even when I enlarge the pictures or zoom in.

Another thing I like about the machine is its small size. I currently have it set up on a closed cabinet in a book shelf. I open up the cabinet when I'm working and simply shut the doors when I am not.

The only downside I can think of is that the user's guide was not included in a hard copy form. I like to have a manual to flip through when looking for information but that may be since I am used to the old days of working from books. If you have no problem with going to the user's guide on your desktop, then this should not be an issue. Also, since it is fairly simple to use I only had to refer to the user's guide a few times.

So this is a handy little machine for home or office use and I very highly recommend it.

"Excellent Duplex Document Scanner for SOHO Use" 2010-03-05
By D. Streit (Manalapan, NJ USA)
My Epson GT-S50 is exactly what I wanted. I use Docsvault Professional to scan in documents to PDF in my laptop. The GT-S50 makes it quick and easy to scan large documents of any size. For example, I scanned a two-sided insurance policy of 80 pages in minutes directly into Docsvault. I can also scan using CutePDF Professional if I don't want to scan into the Docsvault respository. Their software can de-skew crooked pages. I particularly like that the software will recognize blank pages (with less than 2% ink coverage which is adjustable) and skip them. Only downsides: No flatbed, so I can't scan pages from periodicals and books. But for that, I have my old Brother MFP. The scanner is USB-only; I would have liked to see an Ethernet port, or even a wireless adapter built in. Still, I would highly recommend this scanner for moderate duplex B&W or color document scanning. For it's intended purpose, it works very well.

 "GARBAGE" 2010-06-01
By David E. Heintz (Oakland, CA, USA)
I am a faithful Canon user. I love their digital cameras. I have used all kinds of digital scanners, digital video etc. I have set up my own scanning situation with a point and shoot canon and a close up lens that does WAY better scans. This scanner may work well for paper images or even sheet film but for scanning from 35mm film, slides or film strips, it is worse than useless because it makes you think it will work. The res in dpi or ppi does not match advertised specs. Specs say 9600. Interface window says 4800. When you get into the actual scanning window for film, the max. scan definition is 1200, and the scans don't seem to have even that res and are terrible in terms of lightness, sharpness and overall usability. The one I bought is back in the box on the way to return. David Heintz, Media Instructor

Great scanner - easy to use. Besides scanning, it also makes color & B&W copies (comes out of the printer), & PDFs. It can also scan negatives of photos, but I haven't tried that yet. Quality is very good. My previous Canon Scanner was also good, but it was not compatible with Windows 7 and there were no drivers for it. Canon makes great scanners!

 "GREAT PRODUCT" 2010-05-23

I had many many photos from years past that I was wanting to load as archives for my family. Was not looking foreward to the task of loading with a flatpanel scanner. This item did it all for me in record time. Extremely fast loading ---just feed the photos thru and transfer to file!! Only complaint---uneven feed because photos are not guided--rectified by holding finger against side of photo as it is fed in.

"It worked better than I expected" 2010-05-22

The scanner was small and easy to tote. It was easy to use and did a decent job of scanning. I used it to scan old photos that didn't rate being in a photo album but now that they are "old photos" they have more meaning than ever. I'd recommend this scanner to anybody that needs a portable, easy to use scanner of 4x6 and smaller pictures.

"Better than I expected based on the reviews" 2010-05-16
By R. Majiros (Nashville, TN)
I had ordered the new, larger model but I didn't know how long I would have to wait so I canceled that order and reluctantly bought this model. I knew this had to be better than than manual flatbed scanner method that I had used for the past 15 years so I thought it was worth a try, even though some of the reviews made me a bit skeptical. Overall, I am very happy with this device. Not only was I able to complete a huge scanning project for someone else, I also managed to scan almost all of the family photos, at least the ones without the thick, instamatic rails and backings. While scanning is still my least favorite part of the creative process, it is much better than than using my all- in-one desktop scanner.

You still can have a lot of work to do if you don't take your time and feed the photos straight. It takes about 15 to 20 seconds for a photo to process, depending on the size, before you can scan another photo and there is nothing you can do during this time except have the next photo ready to go. If you wait about three seconds after a photo goe through to start another, you can usually preloaded the next but this does not always work and when it doesn't, you risk then next photo going through a little crooked if you are not careful. Probably best to wait as the instructions suggest but I can manage this quite well. Also, I should mention as other reviewers have, you do not need to use the feeder sleeve. I've never used it so I don't know how it affects the scan quality but I can't imagine it being better to use it. If you are scanning very delicate photos or clippings then maybe you would want to use it.

The photos scan to a 250 MB memory card that come with the scanner. While that does not seem like much space, I have never filled it and I typically scan batches of 150 photos before dumping them on the computer. I was a bit surprised to learn that the native JPG format that the images are saved in is not compatible with a Mac. I had to install a $20 batch converter to get them into a format that iPhoto recognized. I was a little disappointed to have this extra step but there are some advantages to using a batch converter to give all of the images a meaningful file name and put them in the desired size and format so in the end, I'm glad iPhoto would not read the native format.

So far, I have scanned just over 1000 photos and with the exception of a couple early scans that streaked a little bit, I have not had any issues and the quality of the scan is just about as good as the original photo. Once I get the photos on the Mac I wipe the memory card clean for the next batch. I am still looking forward ton the release of the larger model that is supposed to be even better than this one. However, if you get forced into this model in the meantime, I think you may be pleased with the results.

I bought this product with the intention of scanning all of our old family photos from albums. So far it has worked perfectly for these purposes. The quality is just fine and it is so easy to use. I can just sit in front of the TV and feed my photos through, its great!

I do not use the included sleeve. The pictures scan fine without it and its useless if you get any scratches on it anyways.
