All works very well. Only issue is that it takes a long time for the scanner to boot up and start the initial scan. After the initial scan it moves rather quickly. This may be a software issues since I have plenty of RAM and I am using Win7 64 bit.

I received the scanner in a timely manner, in good condition. The software was easy to use and hookup instructions simple and clear. Unfortunately, the scanner would not work. After following the "problem" guidelines, I finally called in a professional computer tech. After three hours, we gave up and the scanner was returned. The company was very helpful with the return. No idea why it didn't work.

I previously had a HP scanner and wanted to stay with HP because there were no problems. All features are good. Ease of use is good. I rated 3 stars for Mac use, longevity, and slides because I can't comment on those.

I did have issues with installation of the software and getting some of the functions to work. I don't recall the exact error, but a google search of the error led me to the answer. HP on line help topics were useless.

I bought this because I needed to scan a few dozen very old negatives of varying sizes. I couldn't find much in this price range, and none of the other models seemed to stand out. That being said, I pretty much agree with the criticisms that other reviewers remarked on: It's very slow, software is not very good and is confusing, and it doesn't look like a lot of engineering thought went into it.



After being frustrated, I bought a third party software package that is used for scanners ([...]) and found out that most of the problem with speed must reside in the HP software. The Vuescan software package speeds up the whole process by a factor of 3 or 4, and is easy to use to boot. So, my recommendation is either to return for something better, if you can find something, or try this software (for another $40.00) or something similar.

Well with boxes of 35mm negs and slides I was hoping this would allow me to EASILY scan items into mycomputer for

distribution to family. Dream on.

This was to replace my old EPSON 1660 scanner that ALSO did neg strips and slides, and became unuseable for

those tasks due to

A its old like 7 yrs

B Epson support is not so great, and one has to regularly cleanse the drivers and

reinstall, including the )(#*)@#*$() wiping clean from the registry. All this chaos

worked intermitently for couple or 3 yrs, then gave up the ghose Hence the

purchase of current computer at low $$$ cost.

HOWEVER the same problems ocurred, it worked like once, and since then NADA

and here I M with ANOTHER defunct scanner.

C The problem with BOTH these items is basically the software 'switch' that turns

off the paper scan light and lights the upper light so one gets light THROUGH the

transluscent neg or slide. In any case I M all back to the same ()@#$)*((@#)$

stop, reinstall, pray or chant, and usually get no action.

 "Scan quality ok but some features I don't like at all" 2010-05-09

Setup was pretty easy. I'm not super crazy about the software it uses but it's ok. Needless to say like anything else these days it doesn't come with a user manual. The defaults are set to save things in formats that are not the most widely used (like TIFF instead of PDF) and it took me a little time to figure out how to change that. The photo default is set to "something or other VIVID". When I scanned a photo I was horrified! I thought this thing is crap it's going right back! Of course with no manual I had no idea what was wrong or how to change it. Luckily I don't give up TOO easily and figured it out eventually. Also, I think "one touch" is a bit misleading.



There are 2 things that I really don't like about the equipment itself. The first is that it doesn't have a power button. If it's plugged in, it's on. I'm not crazy about that at all so I just don't keep it plugged in. I don't know why a manufacturer would make anything without a power button. The second is the plug itself. I'm not exactly sure how to explain it, but the prongs on the adapter go in the opposite direction. I know that doesn't sound right. It's sorta like instead of going up and down they go side to side. You probably still can't picture what I mean so let me just say that if you have it plugged into a surge protector or power strip it will cover 3 outlets (another reason not to keep it plugged in). When I use it I have to pull other plugs out to make room for it. However you could plug it directly into the top outlet of a wall outlet and it wouldn't cover the bottom outlet. The adapter will stick out to the side instead of the bottom.



I deducted two stars for no power button, the plug, no printed manual, and the goofy defaults. (Acutally I would have given it another 1/2 star but I couldn't figure out how.) I haven't really used it much, mostly just scanning a couple of pics and documents just to test it out and make sure it's ok, and as far as I can tell the scan quality is pretty good, once you change the photos from the vivid setting. For $60 I think it was a good deal.



(BTW 5+ stars for the purchasing experience from Tiger Direct through Amazon!)

I bought this scanner because it seems to be a newer model than the others offered by Pandigital, and it can scan at 600 dpi. The entire scanner just almost fits in my hand - but I have little hands - so when I got it I could hardly imagine how it could work as it claimed to. At this point I have scanned around 500 pictures, and I'm pleased. Most came out perfectly, good quality and no small white lines. After the first 150 or so, though, the lines started appearing. I calibrated and cleaned it, which is very, very simple, and the picture quality improved - but the lines did not completely disappear. Especially when the picture is dark, or if people are wearing black, the lines appear. Even if you calibrate and clean it two or three times, the lines persist, and then eventually go away again - mostly. My advice is to plug the scanner into your computer every 100 scans or so and check them. Sometimes I would have to go back and rescan 4 or 5 of them, but the rest would be fine. Other times, the last 10 or 20 photos I had scanned would have many lines.



I would suggest this product for anyone who wants to quickly scan pictures, with the caveat that the quality is not always going to be perfect. It takes a few seconds to feed the picture through, but I used that time to remove and replace pictures in my photo albums. All in all, it is a very quick process. It seems that this scanner has the best possible resolution at the moment, and personally I am pleased with the quality of the pictures at 600 dpi. In a year or two, hopefully they will have fine-tuned the technology and gotten rid of the line problem. For now, be prepared to have to fuss with it a bit to get pictures without lines. I think it is definitely a fair trade-off, though, to be able to scan pictures so quickly and portably.

I have bee looking for a portable, easy to use scanner for awhile. This product esceeded my expectations. Scanning photos is quick and easy. I can scan over 150 photos in an hour. It is a great way to preserve old photos. The quality of the scanned photos is excellent. I can't wait until they come out with the larger sized scanner. Tip: When you visit your parents/relatives scan in their old photos, download them to snapfish, have them printed at a local store, and pick them up within the hour. You can then label them with names and dates - they can be tagged later which takes a little more time.

The Pandigital "Photolink One-Touch PANSCN04 Photo Scanner" performs very well as a standalone scanner for most 5"x7" or smaller photos. My wife and I are at the age where we are starting to inherit family photo collections and, although the circumstances that bring us these photos are less than joyful (usually), we are aware that these images are often the last tangible record of some of our great grandparents, distant relatives, and events and places from times past. In the past I used a flatbed scanner to digitize our old photos, but that is a time consuming and tedious process that can take hours sitting in front of a PC and walking back and forth to the scanner laying pictures on the surface. The "Photolink" significantly reduces the time and effort involved in importing photos to the PC and the results are usually very high quality. Here are my observations:



Pros -

+ Stand Alone; does not need to be connected to a PC when scanning, making it easy to work on a large stack of photos while watching TV or at a family reunion (we have a big event every two years or so)

+ Good Image Quality; scanner supports resolutions of 600 and 300 dpi, and produces clear images with accurate colors

+ Includes 1g SD Card; holds hundreds of pictures and, with nothing extra to buy, you can start scanning within minutes of opening the box

+ Easy to Use; this is a very simple device



Cons -

- Does Not Like Polaroid Pictures; the scanner is sensitive to the thickness of the picture and most Polaroid pictures will not feed

- Conflicting Instructions for "Sleeve"; instructions for using the included sleeve differ in the User Manual and on the device, but we usually use it all of the time now

- Requires Cleaning Often; not too much of an issue since it comes with everything needed and it is easy to do, we clean it before every new "stack" of photos



Misc -

* Not Battery Powered; this has an AC wall adapter, so that needs to be taken into consideration if planning to use at events

* Can Be Used As a PC Scanner; includes software that allows connection as a USB scanner, but I haven't needed to try that feature



This is a very handy scanner that works better than expected! For those that are interested in "fixing" old photos once they have been scanned, I recommend Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 and Digital Restoration from Start to Finish, Second Edition: How to repair old and damaged photographs.

I received the scanner today and tested six 5x7 photos. I noticed in night photos that the black sky had some markings, but not bad at all. I think that most people wouldn't notice it. I scanned at both resolutions and I really couldn't tell the difference on my screen or after printing them. I'll test more, but so far I really like this scanner and the size is incredibly small. I look forward to its getting a lot of use.

Bought this scanner to grapple with the problem of scanning all those old photos. No problem with software install. Scanning pics beautifully of all sizes. Is pretty good at recognizing how many objects are on the glass, but needs a little space between each object to recognize correctly. I was able to scan 9 school pics (small) at the same time and it recognizes them as 9 different pics. It will scan 4x6's well, but if you put on 4 at a time, it will recognize it as 2 documents instead of 4. Overall just got it but love it so far.

I purchased the Canon CS5600F Color Image Scanner for scanning very old pictures, old scrapbook pages, negatives and memorabilia. Loading the software on my PC was simple, connecting the scanner was easy and scanning was fast. All images turned out pretty good and I scanned a variety of items: old newspaper articles, hand-written letters, old photographs (B&W, color, polaroids) and programs. I have been very happy with this product!

I was going to give this item a five, but decided to give it a four because of a few quirks. First, I really don't like the sound it makes while scanning. It is quieter than my old Canon, but very shrill.



The set-up CD takes you directly to the download for Snow Leopard, so that part was easy. Unfortunately, after I downloaded all the files and turned it on, nothing happened. It was a Saturday so there was no one at Canon to help me. On Monday, I set everything up again before I called and, to my surprise, I turned it on and everything worked fine. Then, when I moved the equipment back to my office, it didn't work again. As it turns out the problem is that when I plug the cable into the USB port next to my power cord, it doesn't work. I have to use another port. I don't know if this is a Canon flaw, a Mac flaw, or just one of those things.



All in all, I'm pleased. I suppose I'll get used to the sound. The software is easy to use. The images are fine and speedier than I'm used to when scanning. The more I use it, the more I like it.

I have had three or four scanners in the past. All have been hard to get the software to load and run and complicated to begin using. This one was a snap.



It was literally up and running in a few minutes. The unit itself is not a light piece of plastic but a substantial device. Scanning was very easy. Masks are provided to scan various negatives and slides and were easy and quick to use.



This is a very good buy for the money.

I took my new scanner on a scrapbooking retreat weekend and even with the limited space that I was alloted, I was able to scan to my heart's content. The Epson 4490 is not an extravagant scanner. It does what it says it does and it does it pretty well. I was surprised at how slow it is at times but that all depends on the settings you have set for the scans. If you just want a scanner and don't care about advanced features, this is the one.
