I was concerned by some of the negative reviews, but this thing works just fine. OCR is remarkable. Save yourself a few dollars and just get the CardScan Executive version, it comes with both Windows and Mac software (you need to go to their website to retrieve a Mac serial number using the included Windows serial number).

I bought this product a year ago after seeing it at the Macworld Expo and and initially liked it. But the initial excitement wore off quickly:



1.) When I synced with my address book, I lost all my address book entries. This is a rather big deal, so please make sure you back up your address book before you sync.



2.) I bought a new Mac recently and installed the cardscan software on that new Mac. To my surprise, it turned out that I was not able to use the software on both my old and my new Mac. I received a message that the license key was already used and that I had to buy a new one (for $207.99!). This is despite the fact that, when I bought the scanner and the software, there was no mention of any restriction of the license to one seat or one computer or one user. The order confirmation did not mention any license restrictions and the license agreement that is embedded in the software does not refer to such restriction. I believe strongly in intellectual property protection, BUT, but it is a very questionable business practice to disable the use of a product that a customer paid for in full until an additional (and, I might add, substantial) amount is paid when that was not part of the purchase or license agreement. Obviously, if taken to court, the company would lose. But if you are not prepared to go to that kind of trouble, you might want to stay away from this product. When I emailed the company inquiring about this business practice, I received no reply to my question.



3.) When it became clear that the company was not going do to anything about the random license restriction, I asked about the necessary steps to remove the software and all related files from my old Mac in order to be able to use the license key with my new Mac. Saying that this was like pulling teeth would be a huge understatement. I had to send 7 or 8 emails to finally get the answers. Mind you, this is something that is normally clearly stated on a software company's website or is even in the embedded help file. And even if not, it hardly ever takes more than one email to a software company to get clear instructions; not even from small software developers who don't have a dedicated customer support team.



If you plan on using this product on one computer only, don't plan on buying a new computer that you want to use the scanner with and don't plan on contacting customer support, you will probably be fine. Otherwise, I would think twice about buying this scanner.

I purchased this after reading the mixed reviews here on Amazon.com. The bottom line is that I am still using the device on the Mac platform as I do find the utility to outweigh it's glitchiness.



The product was not easy to install. My initial entry of the registration code (from my sealed box) was met with a response that this product had already been registered. That took a couple of phone calls to get resolved with a new and unused registration code.



My biggest issue with this product occurs when I try to clean up the scanned data. The program fills in the respective fields with values derived from the scan. Naturally, you expect to do some cleanup in fixing typographical errors or moving data around from one field to the next. But routinely, I get about thirty seconds into my edits when the program mysteriously reverts the data back to the incorrect scanned values that I have just been cleaning up! How aggravating. To compensate for this, I now wait at least thirty seconds after each scan so that the program has it's chance to process whatever it's processing. Initially, I thought this error might be related to my own computer processor. But the program does insert the scanned data into the fields almost instantaneously after the scan. It's only about thirty seconds later while I am in the middle of my edits that it re-populates the fields with the original and sometimes incorrect scanned values.



A couple of inquiries to tech support has not yet resolved this issue. In my humble opinion, I think they've got software issues.

The scanner is reasonably quick, once it warms up. After going to sleep mode, you need to wait for the scan lamp to warm up, maybe 10 to 15 seconds.

The paper handling has been perfect. I have had no misfeeds so far.

We also use the scansnap scanners. The xerox sheet feeder is superior, and handles paper much better. The scanning speed is a little slower than the fujitsu.

The quality of the scans are very good.

We bought 3 of these for our office and use them a lot. They are very robust. Recently one user had problems with the scanner driver crashing on their PC. Xerox/Visioneer support was very good. Toll free call, CSRs where located in the US (not out sourced to India or some other job stealing country), and the CSRs listen and don't make you repeat steps you have already taken.



Only cons is that you can't re-install the drivers from the support website. The CD has a key driver component that is not included with the drivers on the website, so don't lose that CD.

Sorry to say this product was an immediate disappointment. Problems with scan quality and software right out of the box. The bundled software is the typical junk that no one would consider purchasing as a stand alone application, thus much of the "bonus" software needed to be uninstalled immediately. Scanner speed is OK, image quality is OK but for the cost of this unit, I anticipated far greater of everything from a company like Xerox. One bright point was that the support was (over the phone) was far superior to any that I have used in years. Prompt, astute, concise answers.

The scanner is perfectly capable and in fact does a very good job on 20 or fewer pages per set. However, there is a wear item that they don't warn you about. It's called a ADF Pad assembly. They provide an extra one "Free" with every scanner. The wear part is a little silicone rubber pad smaller than a postage stamp. To get a replacement from Xerox will cost you $99.99 for a "cleaning kit, that has two pads and some alcohol pads and swabs. BUT, if you call to bring this to their attention, they WILL make a special deal for you at $29.95 per assembly IF you have a bulk order of 24 or so.



I am going to find some 1/16" silicon rubber sheeting and cut my own. Should come out to about $0.10 per fix.

Listen. The IrisCard Pro 4 is a great tool to use for business. Some of the cards were too graphic intensive for it to read the, properly, but the majority of my extensive card collection scanned easily and did not require much alteration. BUT, having all the information scanned made it easy to update information. A definite must have for any sales force looking to organize their contacts.

I had always wanted to try this scanner to organize my collection of business cards. So I bought it and never liked it. It does not work. I scanned over 50 cards so far and had to literally correct or type addresses and phone numbers, etc. Especially, it never captured the company names correctly at all. Only thing that I liked was the software but you can get similar software elsewhere for far much less. Therefore, please do not waste your money on this device. I think that this scanner is worth probably $25 or less.

This item is quite good and reasonably priced. It arrived on time and in perfect condition. The main problem is that it does not include the whole slide in the scan. You can move the slide to some extent to get the important part and you can put vertically oriented slides in the holder horizontally and then rotate them with you photo software, but you do loose some of closly cropped slides. Some loss in quality in the scanned image, but overall quite acceptable. If you have a lot of slides to scanned it certainly beats the high prices of having a photo shop scan them.

The Imagelab scanner cropped about 1/8" off both edges of the images (both on the scanner screen and the image file) when I scanned slides, even though I carefully followed all directions and centered my slide in the tray. This is a significant defect in the design of the product, considering the images did not fill the entire width of the slide. The response from Imagelab was, "Due to the nature of the fixed sensor some cropping may occur." I returned the defective scanner and received a replacement. The replacement scanner crops less image from the slide than the first, but the results are unacceptable.

Overall, the scanner works exactly as documented and is a good value. I've identified only a few problems so far, and one is mostly a minor issue of needing to do a little extra work. I bought it to convert my mother in laws enormous (70K+) slide collection to digital form before the media failed completely.



On the positive side, there's not a lot that can go wrong with this device. It's a straightforward digital camera/projector device, and most modern operating systems recognize it immediately as a digital camera and let you use it with zero software installation. I plugged it into my Macbook and it immediately "just worked". Images are reasonably sized and quite sharp (assuming the original slide is in moderately good shape). The ability to put an SD card in and just scan until it's full is very nice (although supporting a SD card larger than 2G would be nice -- the 2G ones are getting hard to find). If you're doing a lot of slides, I'd suggest having a friend help -- with two people (one loading the trays and one scanning), you can do about 2 slides per minute.



The problems I mentioned above are: 1) if you have the older thicker plastic slide carriers (a hard plastic frame around the slide film), it's difficult to fit them into the trays, and then to push the trays through the scanner. The cardboard slide carriers work fine. Second, 2) the slide tray design forces the slides to be inserted with the long axis of the slide going from left to right. This means that if you have a lot of images that are taller (vertically oriented), you'll have to do a fair amount of rotating images in iPhoto or similar programs to get everything right side up. 3) it's hard to get the slides positioned correctly so that the top or bottom of the image isn't cut off. There are registration notches on the slide trays, but they don't seem to be really calibrated to the position of the lens. You eventually get the hang of it as you work with it, but it would be really nice if the notches matched the image field correctly.



I'm about 35K slides into the project, and so far it's held up pretty well. I'd say it's a keeper.

The product is easy to use and functioned reliably for as much as I used it before I returned it. The images were dark in the corners and there was dust some where internal to the machine. There was the same dust specs in the same location on every slide I scanned.



A little better light source and better quality assurance would make this a great product. But, as it is it is not worth it.

First of all, my qualifications: I'm a retired computer consultant who bought his first personal digital scanner about 20 years ago. So I know my way around digital scanners and TWAIN settings needed to get a scanner to work properly. Anyone considering this scanner needs to know that this is not your typical digital scanner--it's an appliance. You plug it in, poke the memory card in the slot, and begin scanning pictures. No futzing around with settings or DIP switches--it just works. What's the fun in that?



If you haven't noticed, I'm poking fun. The Pandigital is a great little sheet fed scanner.

I've taken the same 8 x 10 picture and scanned it with the Pandigital and my HP flatbed scanner. I see no real difference in the scans and the Pandigital was faster and didn't require being attached to a computer running specialized software. It's fast, relatively cheap, elegantly designed, and SIMPLE to use. The is now no excuse for letting those old photographs to languish in those boxes. Bring the into the 21st century and share them.

The first thing we noticed about the PANSCN06 scanner was its small size. The scanner is about the size of the cardboard tube used for a roll of paper towels. The unit is amazingly powerful and versatile considering its small footprint.



We scanned a family album of 50 various size snapshots from the 1950s and 1960s by placing the scanner in front of the keyboard with the usb cord attached to the computer. Then we got going and placed photo after photo into the scanner slot, with the dual rolls of the scanner doing the work by pulling each photo through the front and out the back. The scanning of 50 photos required less than half an hour. Most of the time was spent removing the photos, then reinserting them back into the family album once scanning was complete.



Because we elected to scan directly to the computer rather than the SD card, we got immediate feedback by observing each scan on the monitor screen in near real-time. Thus we could tell if a photo had been scanned to our satisfaction, or needed to be re-scanned due to cockeyed orientation or some other reason.



As others here have observed, there are two scanning resolutions, 300dpi and 600dpi. We have only used the lower resolution, but have no complaints. The scans on the computer screen are at least four times larger than the original photos, which renders detail sufficient to blow us away.



There has been an issue with Pandigital scanners regarding lines appearing in the scanned image. We experienced no such problem after 50 scans. Reviewers on other websites have suggested opening the scanner case to clean the scanning glass of baked-on dirt or debris which cause the lines. We are prepared to attempt this remedy if needed, but only after the warranty expires.



There is one important issue about old photo scanning that needs to be brought to light here. This scanner is proficient at revealing details, some wonderful and some not, which are not obvious in the original photos. Thus, that hairy facial mole on Aunt Matilda's face in 1956 will once again be front and center on your computer screen, even if it was not that apparent in your little 2 x 3 print from the Eisenhower administration.



In our case, we grew up with a large active family that abused photos. Thus, after scanning we found ourselves using the eyedropper and paintbrush in Photoshop to restore images. We removed a wrinkle caused by a puppy teething on a print. We digitally blotted a red raspberry jam stain from my sister Susan's nose. We whitened the image to remove yellowed aging appearance. And so on.



Bottom line: great value, quick way to archive your treasured family moments from yesteryear.
