Although modestly priced, this scanner performs well. Very intuitive and easy to use. Had a number of old film prints to scan and it did it very well, lending itself to later processing in Photoshop Elements. Also did a few PDF scans and photocopies. All worked well. I got a new computer with Windows 7. My old scanner had died a short time before I decided to get a new computer. This time I wanted to try a USB powered scanner with less features than the last scanner I had. I shopped on line and picked this model. This scanner was very inexpensive. It easy to use. Took a short time to learn how to use its operating system. The only bother was that I had to download the Windows 7 driver from Canon before it would work with my new computer. If you need an easy to use, basic scanner then I can recommend this model.

Very easy to set up and since the output goes to an SD card, there is no issue of compatibility. Small device so you don't need to have a large work area (like you would for a flatbed scanner). Much faster than flatbed scanner as well. Very few buttons to work so even my daughter could scan negatives. Flip side is that there really isn't any option for editing of the images but I could do that once I got it onto my computer.



If you want to digitize your negatives easily (and can't afford to pay someone else to do it), this is a good option.

Easy to use small scanner. Quality of the scanned images are pretty good. Preview images fast and scan and store them fast. Happy to have it. Compared to flatbed film scanners it is fast in scanning slides and film. Trays are easy to use. The limited software supplied is very good for image rotation and flipping.

This is one of the slickest products I have ever used. Got it last night and scanned my 20+ year old wedding photos within the first few minutes. Yeah, I'm sure you could get slightly better picture quality from a professional scanner by spending hundreds of dollars more, but I am an imaging perfectionist and I am thrilled by the bang-for-the-buck of this scanner. For photos that are only going to be viewed on a computer monitor or as 4x6 or 5x7 photos, this thing is amazing. If you are a professional, looking to create image files for commercial purposes, this is not your scanner. But if you're like me, with boxes of deacdes-old 35mm negatives (or slides) that you simply want to add to your digital collection, this will not disappoint. It is so fast and easy to use. Stick in an SD card, turn it on, and stick in your negatives. It scans and saves each one in <5 seconds. The live-view screen is wonderful, and the fact that you can do all this without a computer is fantastic. I plan to scan negatives from my sofa, while watching TV tonight.



My only nit-picks are that I don't like the way the USB/power connector attaches. I may tape it in place so that the leverage of the 90-degree angle doesn't accidentally break it. The images are coming out just a tad over-exposed, but not blown out. The best photos may get a minor Lightroom tweak just to take the exposure down a tiny notch. The color and focus seem just as good as what the original SLR produced all those years ago. Yeah, it picks up more dust than you can imagine, but that's hardly the scanner's fault. So far I've used it on Kodak and Fuji negatives and it adjusts to the differences quite well, and automatically. (I used to work at a photo lab and we had to program the big beasts with different "recipes" for the different film stocks, and if you told it the wrong type, the colors would be off. This little baby seems to do all that automatically just by optically scanning the film base.) It uses LEDs for the scan light, so it should last forever. (Of course, once you're done with your negatives you can always resell it to the next guy.)



I dare say that it's fun to use, especially seeing all those long-forgotten photos now becoming accessible again. I was a little hesitant to buy it - how good could it be for the price? Great decision. Great little product. You can even pay your kids to do the scanning... it's that easy. BUY IT - you'll really enjoy it.

One of the primary reasons I bought this particular scanner was it's claim it was Windows 7 compatible. While that statement is true. It does require some qualification in my mind. The Windows 7 drivers are NOT included with the scanner (at least not the 64 bit versions). You'll need to download them from Canon's site, which is straight forward enough. What isn't so straight forward is the Photo editing software that's included. It is NOT Windows 7 compatible. Windows will warn you each time it launches that there on known compatibility issues. Windows will recommend a fix, which is to purchase an upgrade of the software. If Canon is going to advertise this as Windows 7 compatible, I think ALL the included software should be, as well. All and all, now that I have it working, it seems to work quite well, easy to operate and good quality images are produced. I'll look at another editing software, but I'm not sure it'll play as well with the acquisition software that comes with the scanner.

I bought this scanner to scan mostly negatives of pictures I had in a shoe box that were stuck together with tape on them. The pictures were all wrinkled and some had torn from the tape so I figured I could hopefully get some of those pictures back from the negatives. I'm really glad I bought this scanner. I've scanned over 500 negatives within the last 3 weeks and I have to admit I can't complain with the results. The time it takes to scan them (about 2 minutes) each individual picture on the negatives is nothing compared to what is being restored for me. A great purchase.

I love this scanner. I have hundreds of old slides I have wanted to copy for many years. I could never get the results I wanted with some of the other machines I have used. My only objection was the learning curve. I am not at all sure that was not because of me. All and all I think it's a five star item both because of the pictures I could get and the price of the equipment. I'd recomend this to anyone.

I used to work in a digital imaging studio, where I had access to several high-end scanners. I got quite spoiled as a result and have been disappointed in every home-use scanner I've tried -- until the CanoScan 8800. It's very easy to set up, and the software is pretty intuitive. But more importantly, it produces excellent results, whether you're using it as a flatbed or as a film scanner for negatives and slides. The color balance is excellent and the built-in image-analysis algorithms help preserve shadow and highlight detail. I've been delighted to discover that some of my scans look even better than my carefully hand-made prints.



Although it's true that the CanoScan can be a little slow when scanning at high resolutions, it's still faster than some of the commercial scanners that were state-of-the-art just a few years ago. Plus, it's not a big deal if you just set up a batch of 8 to 10 negatives and do something else for a half hour. (The software doesn't seem to take up much RAM, so it's possible to multitask.) Note to Mac users: I'm running Snow Leopard and have had no problems in getting the software and scanner to work on my system.



If you're looking for an inexpensive home scanner that delivers consistently excellent results, look no further!

I purchased this scanner in July 2009. It gave me problems when I installed the driver and I had to install it multiple times. The scanner never functioned properly and Canon tech support was not helpful. In less than 9 months the unit ceased to operate at all.I'm surprised because other Canon electronics are very good.I don't recommend this scanner.

Great scanner... great quality of scan... HOOOOORRRRRIBLE software. I have tried it on 3 different computers... 1 xp desktop, XP laptop, 7 laptop. EVERY ONE OF THEM GETS SOFTWARE ERROR. I have had 5 successful scans out of about 150 attempts. The 'fixes' on the epson website are not at all fixes... Waiting on email response from Epson about a fix.

This was a great little scanner, easy to set up, small footprint. good software. I purchased it to use to scan 35mm slides for a presentation at my next high school reunion. I set at up and tried it the second it arrived from UPS. It installed easily then I began scanning the 35 mm slides as per the unit's instructions. Things were going great then about 45 minutes into it (approx 60 or so slides scanned) I got an error of communication failure. I reset the scanner and it seemed to work again. then I received another error saying to remove the scan may and close the cover (was already done) Each error would cause the scanner power button to flash orange. some times I would restart the scanner and it would remain flashing orange and I would hear a grinding noise from the top cover. (The unit is very flimsy to begin with) It appears the back light unit in the cover was jamming. Every once in awhile it would free up and the scanner would power up green and ready to go. I tried to scan some slides again and soon into it the errors would return in mid scan or when moving from slide to slide. EPSON customer service was useless since they wanted me to ship the scanner to them for REPAIR and then they would send it back. They had no timelime available as to a turnaround time. Since I had the reunion in 3 weeks I opted to return the unit to Amazon for a refund and purchase another brand scanner that was more money but far better in quality.



I had high hopes for this inexpensive unit but unfortunately it failed at what I had purchased it to do in the first place.
