This item was purchased for a home office use. The advertising says 20 ppm b&w. That may be possible if no two sheets of paper stick together but that is rare. After several weeks of use I have found that the only safe way to scan multiple page docs is to stand at the feeding tray and hold all sheets but the one on top to make sure that it draws every sheet in for scanning in order. To make this tedious task more simple I found that loading no more than 10 sheets at a time avoided errors in feeding. The software does provide the opportunity to "add pages" before saving so that you still can create one complete document in this fashion. The quality of the finished scan is excellent. I doubt that any inexpensive ADF would work differently so I would recommend this for light volume users.

This is an expensive, dedicated document scanner, but don't worry if you want to scan photographs, too. Just choose the "Home" mode--or the "Professional" mode, if you are an advanced photo scanner--and you will find a very easy to use photo scanner box. There are a lot of choices you can choose from to do the type of scanning you need, and even more choices if you go to the "Professional" mode. The last time I scanned photos was many years ago with a terrific Canon photo scanner. But I fear the features of that Canon seem quite obsolete compared to this Epson. In fact, I can't imagine any dedicated photo scanner having more features than this one...except this scanner does not do negatives or slides. One of my favorite features of the photo scanning is the "Restore Color" feature. It really does do an excellent job of making older, faded photographs look newer. One 1940's portrait, on matte type paper, that I scanned this weekend, surprised me to no end when I saw the finished scan. I just leave the "Restore Color" and "Remove Dust Specks" boxes checked all the time. There is also a "Fix Backlit Photos" feature and a "Descreening" feature. And the photos can be saved in various "jpeg" and "tiff" formats . . . more than I possibly can understand. That is my one complaint about this very nice scanner--I only wish Epson would have included a detailed paper manual, instead of having only an online manual. It's just not the same.

I bought this scanner primarily for document scanning, specifically to scan multiple documents into multipage pdf's. I was not disappointed.

I'm running a Mac Mini Power PC 1.25 Ghz, 512 megs RAM, OS 10.4.11. I was looking for a sheetfed scanner that would accommodate my OS and Mac platform. There aren't very many out there that do that, I found.

The hardest part is waiting for the lengthy software installation. The disk automatically reads your system and disk space and installs what you need.

After installing the software, I shut down my computer, connected the scanner to the AC adapter and USB cable connect to my Mac, and then re-booted my computer.

Then I put a stack of 10 documents face up into the sheet feeder, and Turned on the scanner.

Then I clicked the "Epson Scan" software, brief wait for software to open. Selected Black and White scanning at 150 dpi to pdf. (It also does grayscale and color, and other DPI's of course--I usually use 150 DPI/B&W for pdf documents because it cuts down on file size.)

Clicked the "Scan" button on the software-- it sucked the documents through one-by-one in record time-- and 35 SECONDS LATER I was looking at the multi-page pdf of the 10 documents that it deposited nicely on my desktop.(188 kb for the 10-page file).

The scans are *amazingly* fast--of course, you should understand that my previous scanner was a Canon Lido 100, which took about 35 seconds PER PAGE for B&W pdf documents.

Do be advised that some of the software features don't work on my Mac. It won't scan to email, for instance. (not a problem for me)

But just being able to scan medical documents quickly into a single pdf file was my goal and this machine really fills the bill for me.

Another plus: you can put the 40 sheets in the feeder and scan it-- when it's done, the machine kindly asks you if you would like to add more pages to the file--so you can then re-fill the sheet feeder and keep on scanning in that manner until you get all of them into one single pdf file.

Oh, BTW, later I scanned all 40 documents through the sheet feeder and they were all fed flawlessly into one file. This thing is gonna spoil me for sure!

Today (April 26) I'm scanning medical reports into multi-page pdf files and this scanner is still super! I'm getting a very consistent 19-20pgs/min in B&W at 150 DPI, and on greyscale I'm getting about 5 pgs/min. An 82-page grayscale file had 11.2 MB, which is still not bad for grayscale. A 122-page B&W file had 2.3 MB, which is very good.

The sheetfeeder has so far worked almost flawlessly except for a few dog-eared pages that wouldn't go through without a little straightening. Other than that, total success. The real beauty is hearing those sheets go through without my having to do anything except re-fill the feeder. It's nearly impossible to re-fill the feeder while it's working--I've tried to do it 3 times with only one success. Anything that disrupts paper flow for even an instant seems to hang up the sheet feeder. No problem, though, as I can wait until it finishes and then re-fill the feeder and select "add page" and it keeps right on a tickin'.

We purchased two scanners to use them as a personal desk top scanners in addition to a big copier/scanner/printer that we already have in our office. It was not difficult to install. We scan HR documents in pdf format to store them. Usually it's about 1-5 pages on one side. We haven't had any problems yet.

Great little scanner and software that's easy to use! But don't buy it unless you never want to upgrade your system, as they do not have a 64-bit driver and apparently don't intend to ever offer one. What upsets me is that when I bought mine, the fact that they didn't support 64-bit systems was buried deep in their website and now it can only run with difficulty under Vmware on my Windows 7 Home Premium PC.

The previous version of the CardScan used to work, then stopped. After trying numerous solutions, I figured I would try a new version. When operating properly, the Card Scan is useful albeit not perfect. It speeds up the process of loading cards, although many of the scans do wind up needing corrections.



The new one did not work either. When trying to install, it won't make it past the calibration phase. I tried every fix they had on the website to no avail. After reading all the reviews, I wasn't that surprised. The easy returns through Amazon made it worth the shot that it would work, but it did not.



If you try it and it works, it's a 3 star product...if it doesn't work, 1 star and back to Amazon. If you give it a shot, make sure you keep your packaging.

I bought the card scanner to scan a boat load of cards I had piled up quickly and easily - and it did that, very well. There were definitely corrections I had to make myself, but on the whole it did a good job. I kind of wish that it scanned the cards in color, but that's hardly necessary. The scanner is small, convenient and was easy to install. I like the online component and the integration into Outlook.

The product performs as advertised. The only difficulty with using it, is the cumbersomeness of loading/unloading the slides into the carrier. The carrier only holds 3 at a time and they often get hung up when trying to close the carrier door. Allow yourself plenty of time if you have several slide trays to convert because it is a tedious process. BUT.... it does work. Just be patient!

For $64 with free shipping, this product is a great deal. Unless you are a complete moron with no common sense, this slide scanner is simple and easy to use. I bought it to convert a few hundred slides to pictures for my in-laws 50th anniversary party and it did a fine job. After reading the reviews on Amazon, I was a bit sceptical, but I kept in mind that there are more idiots on this planet than intelligent people. Set up was easy, directions were simple, I had no software problems(Vista) and the results were good with slides and negatives. The only complaint I have is that the slide and negative trays are hard to open with man hands and seem fragile, but did not break. If your slides are in good shape you will get good pictures, if they are deteriorated, dirty and dark you will get bad pictures, the little scanner can't turn garbage into gold. I don't normally waste my time and energy reviewing products, but I felt the simple and weak minded gave this affordable and easy to use ION Slide2PC scanner a bad rap.

Epson discontinued it's 1680 scanner and this seemed to be it's replacement. I'm not sure if the one I received was broken, but it stalled for 1 minute to "warm up" every time you changed between reflective to transmissive scan methods. The 1680 did not do this.



Maybe I'm in the minority, but my normal usage is to scan a document, then 1 or more associated transmissive images. This was a show stopper for me, so back it went.

Bottom line; I am not a professional photographer. I wanted a scanner to digitalize slides, photos, and negatives. The V500 seems to do that. I loaded the Silverfast dvd and it seems over my head at this time. Any enhancing of the photos I do with iPhoto and that seems to work at this time. Maybe in the future I will use Silverfast.



I have found that sometimes photos age better than negatives and slides.



I am having fun learning to digitalize.



The V700 is doing well by me. A good investment.

I recently bought an Epson V700, and have scanned over 1000 35mm negatives with it. It does an excellent job. It provides a really accurate image of the actual negative. The film tray is very easy to use. It is made of a sturdy plastic, and is very easy to load. I scan four strips at a time, each having approximately 4 or 5 negatives on them, so I usually get a total of 16 to 20 negatives scanned in each scanning session. I scan at 6400 ppi resolution, and save the file as a "tiff" file to avoid compression. I tried to scan at 6400 ppi to a jpeg file, but it would not do it at a 48 bit depth, so as I said I changed the setting to save as a "tiff" file and I get the full 48 bit depth. I have a Windows 7, 64 bit system, and it takes approximately 70 seconds per each negative to be scanned using the settings I already mentioned. I do not use the Ice or any other setting because I want the raw file, and the scanner does an excellent job of presenting detail and color. If you want to increase the color saturation at a later time, it does not come out fuzzy or anything, it just adds the color as needed. I am satisfied with the scanner, I feel that Epson is honest in saying it gives professional quality results. The dmax is 4 so it is a little more powerful than the V500, but the more detail it gives may be worth it. The Windows 7 drivers and manual are available on the Epson site, which I had to download for my system, and everything has been working fine. It is simple to operate, and gives very satisfying results. I compliment Epson on creating such a product.

 "Good value High Learning Curve for a Post-Film Era Film Scanner" 2010-04-12

As film has rapidly fallen into disfavor, film scanners have been more difficult to find. As a semi-professional photographer for over 15 years, I have thousands of 35mm transparencies that still have value as long as I can scan and digitize them in marketable quality.



Previously I owned two Konica-Minolta film scanners. They were small enough to fit unobtrusively in my workspace, and I loved their ease of use and intuitive software. However, since that company left the photography market several years ago, they no longer support their scanners, and the driver and other software is not compatible with Windows 7...meaning I was forced to find a new replacement. I was amazed by how few options there are. Nikon makes a scanner of small size but it retails for over $3000.



After some research this Epson Scanner looked like one of my only options. The price (~$700) was right, and I've always been a fan of other Epson products (esp. printers). Nevertheless this product has three drawbacks worth considering...



First, because it is a flatbed, it is ENORMOUS. Sure, I was aware of the dimensions when I ordered it, and sure, it will scan twelve slides at once, but I would gladly sacrifice the volume/productivity for a "feed-through" style scanner capable of producing high-quality scans while taking up a third of the worksspace of this scanner.



Second drawback is, again, that this is a flatbed scanner. My initial skepticism (that it would be able to produce sharp scans of high detail and good dynamic range) has passed, and the scans I have made so far are great. However, the flatbed itself is kind of a pain. The twelve-slide bracket snaps in to the roof of the scanner, and it a little bit of a pain. Also, b/c it is a flatbed, and there is a gap between the bed and the roof, I think this scanner will be prone to lots of dust and debris getting into it, and it will require frequent cleaning.



Finally, I'm (at least initially) impressed with neither the Epson driver/scanning software nor the "SilverFast" productivity software that came with the scanner. Neither are very intuitive, and while I'm learning to use it, and producing some good scans, there have been some tough times. Both of these programs are too loaded with featurs. I liked Konica Minolta's simple software which allowed the user to make some basic pre-scan/exposure corrections, befroe taking the images into Photoshop to do the heavy-duty post production work.



In general, it's too soon (only a month) for me to wholeheartedly endorse this scanner...but on the other hand, there are few affordable options that render similar marketable quality. I'll probably need to pick up the pace in the next few years and scan as many of my old slides as possible with this scanner, because I suspect film scanners will soon be very rare beasts.

 "Great (if it worked longer)." 2010-05-26

This is a great product from a functionality perspective, but really poor quality. The first unit I had worked for about 2 weeks, and then crashed. It took days to get someone on the phone, but when I did, they were great, and sent a replacement unit right away.



That one lasted for 3 days before it had the same problem as the first one (gets stuck in continuous feed mode without recognizing cards).



When it worked, it was great - very little editing needed - and good synchronization software - and obviously some folks have no problems - but the quality of the scanner unit itself is just very inconsistent. I just can't recommend it...

This is an excellent product. It is easy to set up and use. The card scanner captures the information off the card with very little error and when it does make a mistake it is easy to correct. I reccomend this product for anyone who collects business cards and needs the information for later. It is much easier than typing into a database. The database that comes with the card scanner is easy to look up contacts that you have scanned in.

Given the vast range of business cards styles and terms (example "Cell" v. "mobile") the scanner does an excellent job of reading the card and interpreting the information. I scanned 1300 business cards in just under an hour. Less than 150 had minor scanning errors. In all, I had corrected and saved the digital file in about 2 hours. The only consistent difficulties the scanner has is (1) when the business name is only written within a graphic, and (2) when the card text is in light fancy script.

This is an excellent investment if you are in a profession that requires you to keep in touch with a large number of people. I set mine up and had it working in minutes and scanned in 43 cards immediately. It syncs with Microsoft Outlook, which then syncs with my iTunes/iPhone. It easily got over 99% of the data correct and the ones it missed were because of odd graphics on a business card, which no machine could read. Hugely efficient.
