"Amazing technology, but disappointing implementation" 2010-04-05
By Got2Shop
The ADF technology in this product is amazing. It can separate a paper stack of the thinnest sheets, and scan them all one by one at incredible speed. All you hear is "whoosh whoosh" as each sheet goes through the ADF. Will not double-feed as long as the ultrasonic double-feed detection is enabled. I do not believe any other ADF scanner can compete.

But I had more difficulties getting started with this scanner than with any other I ever had.

Initially Windows would not recognize it as a USB device, possibly because it draws too much amperage from the USB port. I had to try several different USB ports until I found one that worked. I have not had this problem with the Fujitsu ScanSnap scanners.

Then the scanning software that came with it would pop up a generic error message, and refuse to scan. After some detective work, I figured out that the Fujitsu scanning software was attempting to use the drivers from an old Cannon scanner instead of its own Fujitsu drivers. I was surprised that the Fujitsu QA did not test this software on PCs with other scanner drivers. So I had to uninstall the drivers for the Cannon scanner to get the Fujitsu scanning software to work.

The scanning software itself was not very "user-friendly". It had lots of buttons and menu items titled "Settings" and "Setting" and "Configure", all mixed together in a messy UI with little indication of how one differentiated from the other.

Once I got it to scan, the scanning progress window kept stealing keyboard focus each time a new sheet was scanned. This prevented me, for example, from typing emails while the scanner was scanning a stack of papers. I can't believe nobody at Fujitsu noticed this little annoyance. I had to download a separate utility from Microsoft called "TweakUI", and tweak my Windows Registry with it to disallow applications on my PC from stealing keyboard focus from other applications.

Finally I got the scanner to scan, and started scanning lots of documents with it. By now I was pretty impressed with the scanner, thinking that it's not so bad. ...even though there was still that awkward pause between when I directed its software to scan, and when it would actually start scanning.

Then after a few weeks, I started noticing a streak running along the length of everything it scanned. It turned out to be a simple crack it developed on the scanning element glass.

I pondered repairing it at home, but did not want to risk voiding the warranty on this pricey little gem, and it was less than 30 days, so I could still return it. In any case, I could not find the appropriate spare parts on the Fujitsu website. So with significant disappointment, I shipped it back to Amazon.

Amazon refunded the money.

Amazing ADF technology, but hope Fujitsu can improve on the rest of its implementation.

"more robust than Scansnap S1500 but sure is difficult to setup" 2010-03-30
By Avid Reader (northern california)
This has been a frustrating experience. I have owned the Fujitsu Scansnap S510 for years and have been pleased with it except for the constant misfeeds. I found I could get an acceptable function on the S510 if I monitored it and just refed the missed sheets. I bought the Fujitsu fi-6130 because I needed a more reliable and more industrial strength model for the large volume of old and new files I needed to archive. This scanner is definitely faster than a new S1500M which I also purchased.

Now the problem is the setup. It comes with a jumbo of disjointed and overlapping software without any real guidance on what to do. The included ScanALL software is not at all like the elegant and now more appreciated proprietary fujitsu Scansnap Manager which works only on the Scansnap line of fujitsu scanners. The first batch I fed it with 1 legal size page and 6 letter size copies kept jamming on the legal page. It was not automatically recognized as a mixed size batch. I called tech support and they told me to tweak the settings to legal sz with end of page sensor on. Same issue with color and B&W copies in same batch. You have to decide to do B&W and lose the color on the one letterhead or scan the whole batch as color, needlessly ballooning your file size. I gave up and just scan in B&W. The Scansnap just did the mixed copy sizes and the mixed color/B&W and paused to allow you to name and store the file where you wanted it. The fi-6130 under Adobe Acrobat just scans in every doc as untitled1 and I have to rename it before saving it. It is either that or lose control of how you name the file.

Fujitsu tech support tells me all the former Scansnap users are disappointed with the software on the twain compliant scanners like the fi-6130. Just isn't the same thing. To sum it up, the two redemptive qualities of this scanner are faster speed and more reliable paper handling. Otherwise I like the Scansnap line better in the look and feel and operation.

 "Excellent Scanner" 2010-03-28
By Cheryl A. Raboin (Derby VT USA)
I have an accounting office. We decided to go paperless this tax season. We were using an all-in-one machine to scan. Although it did the job once we purchased this machine we were ten times happier with our decision. This scanner will pay for itself with the time we are saving. It handles all size documents and paper types with ease. We have been using this scanner for one month and have had no issues with paper jams. The Acrobat 9 software that came with the scanner works wonderful. I would highly recommend this product for anyone looking to go paperless in an office.

By Rich Painter (So. Calif)
I did a lot of study before picking the 6130. The price was a little more than what I wanted to pay but liked all the features. Received the unit set it up, plugged it in and worked right away. Very fast and sharp scans. Has a small foot print on the desk. The feed tray could be better but it works. No jams so far. Good for business use.

"Scanner Not TWAIN compliant - otherwise not too bad" 2010-05-21
By D Von (USA)
I have used this product for a little over a year now and I think that it is ok. I don't know if I would pay 175-200 for it again though as it does take some work to get some receipts to recognize and classify properly. That said though, the installation went off without a hitch, and I love the small footprint. The fact that it comes with a stand, so you can leave it upright on your desk is a great feature. So is the snap on mounting plate. No doubt it is not a perfect solution, but I have examined alot of other scanning solutions as well for receipts and this is as good or better than most. One thing though to note is that you MUST use the scanner only with the NEAT software. There is not basic scanner or TWAIN compliant driver. I was able to get it working for PDF's only by installing another manufacturer's driver on XP that gave me the ability to scan, but it was a difficult process to go through.

 "A Must Have!" 2010-05-07
By Lise Cloniger (Stafford, VA)
This is a great way to get organized. Just make sure to install the program on a large HD. I put it on my laptop and should have installed the app on my external HD. I just wish that you had the option to store the database in a different location than the app. Now I have to backup the DB, install the app on the external HD and then reattach the DB. Poor planning on my part. It will only let you store about 300 receipts in the inbox then you have to file them before you can scan more. It will let you scan and file documents, odd shaped receipts go into the document inbox (wish it let you choose the inbox at scan time) but you can move them to receipts when you file. IRS recognizes pdf as valid documentation but I wonder if stores would take back something you bought if you didn't have the original receipt?

"Excellent Hardware - Nasty Software" 2010-05-20
By Power User (USA)
The Epson v30 does a great job of scanning both photos and blk & wht documents on both Win XP and Mac OS X 10.6. The Epson software is both intuitive for the beginner, and allows for deep tweeking for the more advanced user.

The only problem, and it is a BIG PROBLEM, is that the install disk includes ArcSoft software. These 2 programs are extremely intrusive, showing pop-ups on both Windows and Mac OS. Uninstallation was easy on the Mac side but I still haven't figured out how to completely remove off of Windows. The OS uninstaller doesn't do it. It just hangs up, and the crappy software doesn't come with an uninstaller. After searching all of the forums that I could find, I still can't get the Arcsoft crap uninstalled.

 "Epson V30 (Linux Review) - Scanning a Book" 2010-05-19
By Gamearts (Fairfax, VA USA)
I bought this Epson scanner specifically for the job of scanning an art book. I was worried that this wouldn't really give me the quality I was looking for because it was so modestly priced, and compared with the V300 and V500 and beyond, that seems like an understatement. But it does a remarkable job. Even at the 300 DPI setting, I felt like I was getting about as good as I could possibly get.

Warm up time:

This is about 10 seconds or so if you want to get a quick preview before you scan. Pretty fast all in all.

Scanning:

You can scan to pretty high dpi settings. For the purposes of scanning art documents from a book, I didn't really need to go higher than 300. I could barely tell the difference between 600 (about 2 minutes) and 300 dpi (30 seconds or so), so anything past that seemed overkill, especially since I was going to be resizing these to much smaller resolutions (300 dpi is a 10 MB file at roughly 2500 x 3000 pixels, 600 dpi is about a 40 MB file at 5000 x 7000 pixels). Actually the software I was using wouldn't let you scan past 600 dpi at the "Color Documents" setting, so you'd have to change to the "Color Photo" (for scanning photos) setting to go higher. For scanning photos (which have their own setting themselves) you may want to utilize the higher dpi settings, which demand higher quality than a book.

Unfortunately the scan bed isn't as big as I'd like. My art book is just about as wide as the scanner surface but I'm still missing maybe 1/2" (mostly dead space that I don't care about, but still noticeable). But I haven't really taken the time to get the pages out of the binding to do a serious job at it, so maybe that might help. Not a huge issue because my art book is actually irregularly shaped and bigger than standard looseleaf paper size so this shouldn't affect many of your projects.

Linux:

The reason why I went with the Epson V30 is due to there being drivers available for Linux. I'm using Fedora 12 but there are drivers for most distributions, such as Ubuntu, Debian, and so on. If you do a quick search for "Avasys Epson" you'll find them easily. There is no need to use the Epson CD (in fact I haven't even taken it out of the box yet) or have unnecessary processes or who knows what type of 3rd party junk they've tacked on. Just use the Image! Scan software that is part of the drivers and you'll be up and running instantly.

Overall:

Happy with the purchase. The scanner is in a very cool sleek matte black finish and really complements my black desktop. No bloatware involved due to the Linux drivers/sw being available. I got the image quality I was hoping for without having to spend extra by going with the V300 or V500. And last, but not least, I purchased this 24 hours ago from the seller here on Amazon (Beach something or another) and FedEx delivered it next day to my home. 5 Stars PERFECT!

 "Unnecessary Software" 2010-05-15
By Amanda P.
I like everything about this scanner except the software. I'm no tech expert, but I know it installed constantly running software that wasn't even related to the scanner - it was a link to purchase some new product from them. That was pretty annoying.

Otherwise, this works really well on my mac. The image quality is great. You just plug it in, hit the scan button and it will automatically detect the type of document you have. It scans fast too. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase.

I had a previous version of Epson's basic model flatbed scanner that served me well for a decade. After donating it to charity I looked at many similar models and decided to stay with Epson. I run hundreds of documents and photos through this every day. It is even better than the previous model due to the no-wait LED technology. A good, durable, flexible scanner for my needs: customizable, good resolution manual document and photo digitization. Highly recommended.

"Outstanding scanner - does everything I need." 2010-05-17
By C. Gwathney (Alabama, USA)
This scanner does a fantastic job. So far, in both business and personal use, it's been very handy in reducing the amount of paper I have to tote around. The images are very clear and crisp. The OCR software that comes with the unit is very fast, even on my slowpoke work computer. One button operation makes scan jobs a breeze.

My only issue is that I wish it came with a case. Since I use it at work and at home, I'd like to have a case to be able to carry it around in.

Favorite Feature: Duplex, high-resolution scanning.

Worst feature: No carrying case for what is supposed to be a portable device.

Overall: Awesome choice in scanners!

You can watch a video review at [..]

Amazon didn't accept the video format.

The ScanSnap S1300 rocks and this page doesn't do it justice.

BTW, the difference between the ScanSnap S300 and S1300 is simple.

S1300 works with PC and MAC. S300 only works with PC. Get the S1300.

It scans FAST and PDFs pop up on my PC immediately. It does OCR in the background while the PC is idle.

Great, great quality. My old Epson Perfection 1240 never scanned docs with such clarity.

One drawback...you can't use TWAIN with the ScanSnap series. So no "import from scanner" in Photoshop.

But this things will scan a JPG that can you later open in Photoshop. No worries.

As a designer, I'm not impacted since I rarely scan anything in color these days.

I'll let the video show you real-world usage.

Personal stuff has been blurred. ;)

It did take a little time for the rollers to work in, it wasn't gripping paper right at the beginning, but after about a 100 scans everything fell into place.

Colors are good, resolution is great.

As a desk scanner - this is about as good as it gets.

"Works great - and FAST!" 2010-04-29
By Ron (Forest, VA)
I seem to continually need to replace scanners. I have moved a lot and this may be part of the problem with past scanners. Those have mostly been Canon scanners - and they just quit working with my computers (Wintel systems of varying brands). The scanners themselves always appear to power up, but just can't seem to connect to the computers.

Anyway, this one has performed outstandingly. I have had the scanner for awhile now, and am using it to scan very old photographs that are being restored with Photoshop CS4. The scanning process is very much faster than I experienced with old scanners. Warm up time is near instantaneous. Just turn it on and start scanning. The scan itself is also very fast. I am scanning using 1200 dpi as that's about all I can get from the old photos that I am working with.

There was absolutely no issues with Windows 7 and this scanner. Installation was fast and effortless.

I highly recommend this scanner.

The price of the scanner from Amazon enabled me to get the extras (scanning slides and negatives; dust removal; color restoration; backlighting and DIGITAL ICE Technology) I might not have from other sources. The scanner has done everything well so far. It took a little while to get used to (still learning) as I had been using an old flatbed from Visioneer for around 12 years. I'm even able to still use the old Visioneer Paperport software (that all my old scans are in)to access the new scanner or use the new software that came with it.

It may not be super fast on the slides and positive film, but the quality more than makes up for it.

By P. Gallegos (El Paso, TX USA)
The Epson V600 is everything it claims to be. It was so easy to setup and don't have any complaints since purchasing it. It is fast and it will scan more than one picture at a time. You can put as many pictures that will fit on the scanner top (as long as the borders of the pictures aren't touching each other) and it will copy them as individual digital pictures to whichever destination you choose, laptop hard drive, external hard drive etc. I have my laptop, the Epson V600 and an external hard drive hooked up and it sends all my pictures it converted over to the external hard drive. Oh and the slide template makes copying negatives over a breeze. You put in the negative and lets say the negative has six pictures on it, well it will process the negative digitally and save each individual picture as if you just scanned the actual picture. I really like that feature because i have alot of negatives but don't have the actual pictures. I either gave them away, used them or lost them and now i can reproduce all those pictures again with the touch of a button. Needless to say i am very happy with this product and i can't imagine what more possibilities there are. i know Epson makes a higher end unit above this one but that one is about 500 dollars so for the price i don't believe you need anything else than the Epson V600.

WOW! I just got this, loaded up the software, bought a micro SD card, and started scanning. This product is as good or better than advertised. I had a need to scan odd-sized historical documents and am planning a trip to England & Wales this summer for family history research. On the first try I scanned an old document that I swear looks better in the image than in the original! Magic indeed! I bet this will even help defend against Voldemort!

 "Useful in some situations" 2010-05-11
By Edward I. Comer (Brevard, NC)
For letter or legal size paper that is perfectly flat, without tears, creases, staples, etc., The VuPoint MagicWand Portable scanner does a good job scanning. However, it doesn't do very well on paper that has been folded and thus contains creases. It also doesn't do very well with books. Since my primary purpose for purchasing the The VuPoint MagicWand Portable scanner was to scan deeds at the courthouse, it should perform well, although I haven't yet tried it. I research deeds in my genealogy research. The deed books are designed to opened so that individual pages can be photocopied. Previously, I placed each sheet on the table and photographed them with my digital camera, which worked pretty well but I feel that a scan would produce better results. These sheets of paper are flat and without creases or folds, so they should scan perfectly.

When you are rolling the scanner across a sheet of paper (yes there are rollers on the bottom) and it hits a crease, the error light comes on and that spot will be distorted and, sometimes, the scanner stops and closes the file at that point with a partial scan.

The bottom line is that IF you are going to scan letter or legal size flat sheets of paper, then this scanner should work well for you. With books or other less than flat pieces of paper, your results will be mixed, at best.

By the way, this scanner works perfectly with Linux. You plug the cable into a USB port and it is detected as a camera. You may then move or process the jpg files as you would with any camera. Of course the Windows OCR software included on a CD in the box is of no value to a Linux user. It is a shame that they advertise the device as compatible with only Windows and Mac when the only thing incompatible with Linux is the software CD, which is superfluous anyway. Linux already has tesseract as a perfectly OCR solution and even Windows has alternatives which many users will probably already have installed.

 "Amazing Grace" 2010-05-11
By H. Chang (California, USA)
I have many scanners. This one is the best one than all others. It is very light and you can carry it to everywhere without any cable or computer. It will save files as JEPG. Then you can change it to an editable file (word, text...) by OCR program. It is super easy. The scan quality is good and clear. I suggest every student should buy one for your study.....it is really good...one thing I love most.

 "Great Portable Scanner" 2010-05-06
By William V. Derr (Waldorf, MD United States)
I've been looking for a portable scanner for a while, but most of the models out there are sheet fed and I needed something that could scan books. I am a musician and I use software called MusicReader to display my music on a tablet PC (like a music version of an ebook reader). To get my music into the software, I have to use a scanner. I've been looking for something that would allow me to scan the music wherever I am rather than having to take it home to scan it.

When I saw this scanner in the Bed Bath and Beyond flyer, I thought it was too good to be true. I've seen scanners of this type go for close to $200 that only offered 200 DPI resolution. Here is a scanner offering 600 DPI resolution for only $99. At that price I couldn't resist trying it.

Other reviewers are correct that the quality of the scans is totally dependent upon how straight you keep the scanner as you slide it across the page. There are little wheels on the bottom to help it go straight, but I've found that it sometimes needs a little guidance as well. With a little practice, I was getting excellent scans of my music, and although I usually don't print the music out once it is on my computer I can confirm that the print quality is excellent as well.

For loose sheets of music I'll definitely stick with my flatbed scanner for speed and ease of use, but I found that for books and other items that don't fit easily on the flatbed scanner I actually get much better results with the Magic Wand. I have not tried scanning any photos or color documents.

I am delighted to have this scanner as part of my MusicReader/Tablet PC setup. Now my operation is completely portable. This scanner does exactly what it is designed to do, and it does it well. Now I am just waiting to see how it fares in terms of durability and longevity, although at this price if something happened to it I could afford to get another one.

"Heaven sent !! Terrific scanner" 2010-05-16
By grimmbro (Columbus OH)
Have been using this scanner for several months now and it is a dream come true. I have an Epson flat bed scanner that I had been using toward my goal to be as paper free as possible but the effort involved with scanning pages one at a time is huge compared to this marvel of technology. The cost of the unit is totally offset with the time savings gained when scanning. Duplex and single sided pages zip right through and I have made a "quantum leap" forward toward the paper free goal. About a year ago, I purchased an HP autofeed scanner hoping for improvement over the Epson. Big mistake.Using HP software and hardware compared to the ScanSnap is night and day. Highly recommended !!

And the Cardminder software that comes with this bundle, makes it that much more satisfying because I can get rid of a lot of business cards that I can import into Outlook with a SNAP, a ScanSnap !!

Of course, the free shipping with Amazon Prime did not hurt either.

 "Amazing!" 2010-05-16
By Samuel Larter (Murrieta, CA United States)
Amazing!

I bought this based on other reviews here and was amazed by this scanner having 5 stars from almost every review. After installing and using it I now know why. This scanner is almost unbelievably fast and quiet.

Pro's:

*It scans both sides of a document simultaneously so it doesn't have to scan one side, reverse the paper and scan the other.

*It is at least 20 times faster than my old duplex scanner.

*DPI for DPI the resolution is much better.

*The feed mechanism feeds all types of paper without a problem, even thick card stock, three hole punched and previously stapled papers all without a single double feed.

In the first week I scanned over 10,000 pages without a problem. The only drawback, which has been mentioned in other reviews, is the fact that it does not have TWAIN drivers. This did not hinder me as it will scan directly to JPG, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint or Adobe PDF formats which should cover 99% of users. The only thing I wish this had was a flatbed option.

This scanner also comes with a tremendous software suite that includes: Adobe Acrobat 9.0 Standard Edition, ScanSnap Organizer 4.0, ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap 4.0 PC Edition, and CardMinder 4.0. I bought the deluxe edition that also contains Rack2-Filer V5.0 which alone costs nearly $200. The software installs easily and is extremely user friendly.

I would recommend this scanner to anyone that doesn't have to have a flatbed. For pure picture and document scanning this thing is fantastic.

 "I love this scanner" 2010-05-14
By J. Smith (Albuquerque NM)
I purchased the ScanSnap s1500 based on a recommendation from a friend. It is absolutely the best scanner I've ever used. In less than two days, I've scanned almost 50 pounds of paper documents, which I can now shred. The ScanSnap software is easy to use and intuitive. Although I purchased the Deluxe Bundle with Rack-2. I don't think I will need it.

The only negative is that you can't really put in all sorts of different widths and always get good results. For receipts, I use the clear plastic "carrier". It does a great job. But the reality is that most day to day paper is letter size.

If you want to go paperless, I highly recommend this scanner.

 "Stunning scanner." 2010-04-30
By R. Koch (Chicagoland)
This scanner is outstanding. It's fast, reliable, small, easy to use, affordable... What more do you want to know? I'm in a real estate office and agents use it to scan contracts and disclosures. They love it. Since you can scan to email, it just about eliminates faxing.

If some of the pages are upside-down, it corrects it. It scans both sides at once, correcting on the fly. It will skip the blank side of one document, then get both sides of a double sided document. (You can select options of how it handles all of this.) You can mix up the sizes of the documents and it figures it out. It has a double feed detector, so it stops if it pulls two or more sheets at once. (This only happened one time.)

It has OCR, but I haven't needed or tried it yet so I can't comment about that.

The bundled software is easy to use and understand. (Buy the Bundle version, it's not that much more.)

No, you cannot scan books, bound materials or your hand, BUT IT'S NOT MADE FOR THAT.

Final words: Go for it. You'll love it.

 "Fujitsu ScanSnap" 2010-05-17
By Ellen D. Gregory (Indianapolis, IN United States)
I love this scanner. The only problem is I can't figure out how to scan a document and convert the pdf to a Word document, which I know I should be able to do. Of course, when I contact the software people, they say contact Fujitsu--well, you know where this is going. Other than that problem, the quality of the scanned document is INCREDIBLE and it can scan a two-sided document in one scan. Pretty cool.

"Best office p[roduct for $400? Maybe ever?" 2010-05-15
By Michael D. Hallas (Portland, OR)
At first I thought $[...] bucks for a scanner?! After I got it I couldn't believe it only cost $[...]. This thing needs very little work in terms of set up and just scans decent quality images blazingly fast. If I had to buy a new one every six months it would be worth it in terms of productivity. I have a home based solo law practice. This and a decent but cheap monochrome laser printer completely eliminate the need for a $2000 network printer copier.

I have not had one hitch as far as scanning stacks of documents and regularly feed in 50 + documents to the feeder. Only issues at all are it occasionally turns a page upside-down (maybe that's me...), and on pages where there is lots of really dark writing it can bleed through and copy both sides (of course the upside is it automatically senses if it needs to copy both sides of a document--so you can have a mixed stack of single and double sided documents and copy only the documents that actually have content!).

"Great Scanner and great customer service" 2010-05-14
By Random Dodger (San Diego, CA)
I purchased this scanner about a month ago and its worked wonderfully--the only issue I had was with the included Adobe software --it wouldn't load kept saying I had an invalid number --upon taking a ridiculously long time to reach the out of the country customer service at Adobe I was told the activation key was not current and had to contact Fujitsu--seemed very strange to me --upon contacting Fujitsu --which was very easy and explaining the problem I received the best customer service from any tech company I've ever dealt with --it was pretty clear from the beginning that this really was an Adobe problem and Fujitsu could have easily bounced me back to them. Instead they escalated me to a higher level tech support and went out of their way to get it fixed ASAP --Great job Fujitsu!!!

I can really understand why Apple doesn't want to do business with Adobe --they suck!!

 "PC yes. Mac no." 2010-05-13

I use the Fujitsu Scan Snap at home on a Mac, and at work with a PC. Even though I bought the S1500M (M is for Mac), it does not work as well on the Mac.

It does work great on the PC!! In fact, even my fourth grade students can scan, download documents into the proper file, transfer the contents to a travel drive, and then load the contents on the computers of the other teachers in mere minutes!! They love using the ScanSnap, as does their teacher!!

The problem with the Mac is that you must have Microsoft Office or Microsoft Excel in order to scan or save to Word. You can't download it into Neo Office (free software), although I'm still trying to work around this glitch!! The whole process is just more complicated on a Mac than it needs to be!! (I'm over 60, so user friendly is a must!)

 "Win7, 64 bit compatible" 2010-05-17
By J. Scott Davidson (Ware, Ma)
My main concern when purchasing this scanner was it's OS compatibility. There are few reasonably priced scanners on the market were Win7 64 bit compatibly is spelled out. If you follow the directions that come with this scanner, it will be plug and play. The driver that comes packaged with this model maybe out of date, but they have new drivers. You can find them at Epson's website. Remember, it is important that you install the drivers from the website. If you load the driver that comes with the scanner (and it is not the updated version) you may not get the correct drivers to load.

The scanner itself is fast and efficient. It can scan at very high resolution which makes slide scanning more realistic. It also scans color negatives, film strips and medium format film. The results are very nice. The software contains a full kit of tools to make scanning more successful. Anything you might expect like descreening, contrast and exposure, and some nifty filters I haven't seen before. Color restoration works very well, surprising in fact. There are scratch filters, and a few others that all work relatively well.

I've used other scanners slide copying methods and always ended up disappointed. This is the first of four scanners that scanned slides well (and corrected age related problems with little effort). Money well spent, I highly recommend this scanner.

 "Epson V500 Scanner" 2010-05-13
By R. Zamora (San Diego CA)
I purchased this scanner for multiple reasons, the primary one was to scan 35mm slides and negatives to save on a external hard drive old photos, there are several other models from EPSON as well as others on the market, the price is not the key factor here, the quality of the scans are very good, in fact better then what I expected, it is easy to use, load the software, plug and play, and your ready to go.

The software or one of the programs "digital ICE technology" works very well but it is a bit slower then a normal scan, but it is not a deal breaker! The V700 is out now and does have a few more upgrades, (speed) but for the added cost, you should really look into the features of both and then select which one works for you best. Overall, I am happy with the purchase, a five star rating for this item

 "Great scanner" 2010-05-10
By E. Lauber (Nairobi, Kenya)
I wanted to scan old negatives and slides. This scanner does a very nice job. It wanted something faster but could not afford it. So I scan while doing other things. I am very happy with the result. I am saving money and getting results much more to my liking than by having my slides and negatives scanned by a service. I am a power-user who is knowledgeable about photography, so this choice will not suit everyone.

Scanning of negatives and slides in high resolution (4800 dpi and higher) is slow, but you can't get faster without spending a lot more money. The Digital Ice technology is a must for scanning slides and negatives and works VERY well. I removes the appearance of dust without a negative impact on quality. Don't scan slide or negatives without it.

I usually scan slides and negatives at 4800 DPI and that gives quite detailed images. I scan to TIF format and then use a good photo editor to do corrections (exposure, cropping, color balance, resize) and export JPG format final versions in the 3-5 MP size range (but you can resize and compress to get smaller sizes if you want). Then I delete the TIF files.

I have some 25 ISO Kodachrome slides which have a lot of fine detail, so I scan them at 6400 DPI which gives a very nice result, but it is slow and results in very large file sizes. I crop or resize the 6400 DPI scans of 25 ISO Kodachrome slides to 30 MP images (6300 x 4725) or smaller. I have not tried higher than that. The detail in the scans at this high resolution is higher than I expected.

I would buy this scanner again. I think that Epson makes the best scanners for my use. I would not buy a less expensive Epson scanner than the v500 for my use. If my pockets were deeper I would opt for something a little faster.

 "Not bad at all" 2010-05-10
By Mr. X (Bay Area, CA)
So I've scanned a few GBs' worth of prints and negatives now, and I'm very pleased with the scanner so far.

Pros:

ability to scan up to 12 35mm-negatives (two rows of 6)

super high DPI (actually more than I probably need)

no annoying warm-up time

Cons:

occasional error message ("error writing to file") kills the program, but retry and it scans A-OK.

negative holder is slightly annoying (it probably could have been designed better).

Other observations:

scanning a 35mm negative at 4800 dpi gives me a ~6500x4100 image around 3.5Mb. scanning 10 of them takes ~20 minutes without Digital ICE. The scanner software is pretty good. Not amazing, but not bad at all.

"Really Great Deal on This - Best Snow Leopard Solution" 2010-05-05
By L. Gildart (Somerville, MA USA)
I have this up and running using the native Image Capture software on my MacBook running Snow Leopard. I settled on this after borrowing and trying to use several 35mm scanners. This one also works with the 120 film I shoot in my Holga, which all by itself makes it a better choice for me, but what I like even better is that my native image capture software works with it to capture color negative film images in higher resolutions than I will ever need.

Getting photos printed, especially from anything other than 35mm rolls, is a tricky business these days. If you're lucky enough to have a good photo lab, that's great. But if your experience has been anything like mine, you're getting weak prints off perfectly good negatives from people you will never meet face to face. With a decent film scanner, you can make your own prints, with custom settings for each photo. I started shooting film again this year and found it frustrating and expensive just trying to see what my pictures actually looked like.

It took three rolls at one lab, all different films, all different cameras, all $10 per roll to print, to realize that those anemic, grayish prints that all looked the same weren't m fault. So, now, for $7 less per roll, I check "develop only" and scan and print the images myself, with much nicer results. Even including the cost of ink and paper, this scanner will pay for itself within a year.
