 "Magic Wand is right!" 2010-05-12

WOW! I just got this, loaded up the software, bought a micro SD card, and started scanning. This product is as good or better than advertised. I had a need to scan odd-sized historical documents and am planning a trip to England & Wales this summer for family history research. On the first try I scanned an old document that I swear looks better in the image than in the original! Magic indeed! I bet this will even help defend against Voldemort!

 "Useful in some situations" 2010-05-11
By Edward I. Comer (Brevard, NC)
For letter or legal size paper that is perfectly flat, without tears, creases, staples, etc., The VuPoint MagicWand Portable scanner does a good job scanning. However, it doesn't do very well on paper that has been folded and thus contains creases. It also doesn't do very well with books. Since my primary purpose for purchasing the The VuPoint MagicWand Portable scanner was to scan deeds at the courthouse, it should perform well, although I haven't yet tried it. I research deeds in my genealogy research. The deed books are designed to opened so that individual pages can be photocopied. Previously, I placed each sheet on the table and photographed them with my digital camera, which worked pretty well but I feel that a scan would produce better results. These sheets of paper are flat and without creases or folds, so they should scan perfectly.

When you are rolling the scanner across a sheet of paper (yes there are rollers on the bottom) and it hits a crease, the error light comes on and that spot will be distorted and, sometimes, the scanner stops and closes the file at that point with a partial scan.

The bottom line is that IF you are going to scan letter or legal size flat sheets of paper, then this scanner should work well for you. With books or other less than flat pieces of paper, your results will be mixed, at best.

By the way, this scanner works perfectly with Linux. You plug the cable into a USB port and it is detected as a camera. You may then move or process the jpg files as you would with any camera. Of course the Windows OCR software included on a CD in the box is of no value to a Linux user. It is a shame that they advertise the device as compatible with only Windows and Mac when the only thing incompatible with Linux is the software CD, which is superfluous anyway. Linux already has tesseract as a perfectly OCR solution and even Windows has alternatives which many users will probably already have installed.

 "Amazing Grace" 2010-05-11
By H. Chang (California, USA)
I have many scanners. This one is the best one than all others. It is very light and you can carry it to everywhere without any cable or computer. It will save files as JEPG. Then you can change it to an editable file (word, text...) by OCR program. It is super easy. The scan quality is good and clear. I suggest every student should buy one for your study.....it is really good...one thing I love most.

Ok, so I've never left a review for anything before and I just had to with this scanner. Light weight and it WORKS! What I love is that it is SO FAST! Perfect for scanning all that paperwork--bills, receipts, etc.etc. I just put in the drawer and bring it out when I need it! Great Job Vupoint!

 "Great Portable Scanner" 2010-05-06
By William V. Derr (Waldorf, MD United States)
I've been looking for a portable scanner for a while, but most of the models out there are sheet fed and I needed something that could scan books. I am a musician and I use software called MusicReader to display my music on a tablet PC (like a music version of an ebook reader). To get my music into the software, I have to use a scanner. I've been looking for something that would allow me to scan the music wherever I am rather than having to take it home to scan it.

When I saw this scanner in the Bed Bath and Beyond flyer, I thought it was too good to be true. I've seen scanners of this type go for close to $200 that only offered 200 DPI resolution. Here is a scanner offering 600 DPI resolution for only $99. At that price I couldn't resist trying it.

Other reviewers are correct that the quality of the scans is totally dependent upon how straight you keep the scanner as you slide it across the page. There are little wheels on the bottom to help it go straight, but I've found that it sometimes needs a little guidance as well. With a little practice, I was getting excellent scans of my music, and although I usually don't print the music out once it is on my computer I can confirm that the print quality is excellent as well.

For loose sheets of music I'll definitely stick with my flatbed scanner for speed and ease of use, but I found that for books and other items that don't fit easily on the flatbed scanner I actually get much better results with the Magic Wand. I have not tried scanning any photos or color documents.

I am delighted to have this scanner as part of my MusicReader/Tablet PC setup. Now my operation is completely portable. This scanner does exactly what it is designed to do, and it does it well. Now I am just waiting to see how it fares in terms of durability and longevity, although at this price if something happened to it I could afford to get another one.
