I don't have the latest version of the Mac software as everything I use works great. The problem is this scanner doesn't work with OSX 10.4. When I upgraded from 10.3 the problems started. Photoshop didn't recognize the scanner, so I tried a long laborious workaround (that didn't). Now I have to scan everything with my tried-and-true Epson 8 1/2 x 11 or use my PC to use the larger format. In addition the scan edges (even when it was working on my OSX 10.3) tended to have a "harder" look.
If you must have an 11x17 scanner then this is about the least expensive way to go, but be warned.

I've had this scanner for about a month now, and so far I'm extremely happy! I do comics and having a full format scanner makes my life so much easier. I do a LOT of crosshatching on my pages, and the scanner picks up every single ridiculous little line. It's such a great price that I couldn't pass it up and now I don't need to spend the extra time stitching my pages together in Photoshop.
Well... not ALL my pages. I do have a couple complaints about the printer. The first being that it is not QUITE an 11x17" scanner. It only scans 16.5" vertically, which of course cuts off the bottom half inch of the page. Comic pages are drawn on 11x17" paper. However, this isn't usually a very big issue for me since I typically have a gap at the bottom of my page anyways. However, the few times that I have a full page bleed, I have to scan the top and then the bottom and stitch them together. A minor inconvenience, really. It would have been that much nicer if Mustek did their research and just gave the scanner bed that extra half inch. My second complaint is that the corner is not a perfect 90 degree angle. It is ever so slightly skewed and causes some of my pages to scan crooked. Again, this can be fixed in Photoshop. For all I know my scanner the only one that has this as a defect, but perhaps not. Again, just a minor inconvenience. Also, the software seems a little outdated, and it doesn't seem to let you adjust the brightness levels without doing another preview scan (my small Epson scanner software lets me adjust levels and see the results without needing to do another preview).
Overall, I'm very happy thus far. I was worried about the reliability of the scanner, so I went ahead and got a Square Trade warranty for it for like $20 for 3 years (worth checking out). I bought the scanner from Amazon and it arrived in about one week. Pretty fast shipping and such an insanely good price! As it is right now, I'd probably buy it again if something happened to mine.

It's a darn shame that the drivers and customer support are so dismal for this scanner. Because it's not a bad scanner and the price is certainly right. But if you are not technically savvy and not ready to tinker with this scanner I don't recommend it. You will get very little help from Mustek support.
I followed the installation instructions that came with the scanner and installed the drivers before I plugged in the USB cable. Which worked, until I restarted my computer, then the scanner stopped working. I called Mustek tech support, they said that something on my computer was interfering with the drivers and that they could not help me (gee thanks!) After tinkering for most of the day, I ended up uninstalling the software and plugging in the scanner (without installing the software from the CD.) Windows 7 automatically downloaded drivers and it works fine now.

It was easy to install and get it going but when I scanned the second image, the scanners stopped on its way back and you have to unplug it, reboot your computer and try again. It's a piece of crap. Don't waste your money. I tried to call the tech support number but after half an hour on hold I gave up.

After reading the myriad reviews most that seemed to warn about this unit not working well with a Mac I held my breath and ordered it. Fortunately I loaded the software, plugged in the unit, opened Photoshop CS3 and there was the scanning software under IMPORT and so far it's worked well.
