 "Awesome Scanner" 2010-02-26
By R. Nangano (East Setauket NY USA)
this is the most awesome scanner.. It is small & compact and so easy to use. For use in the office, when I have to scan contracts I can do it with such ease.. then I save it as a PDF and then can email to all concerned - FAST. I recommend this machine to everyone who needs a fast scanner for their home or office. You will not be disappointed. There may be cheaper machines out there but once you use this, you will wonder how you got along without it.

"Great scanner...if you have a later version" 2009-02-06
By B. Wyatt (Cave Creek, AZ United States)
I love this scanner...it is fast, generally bullet proof. There are a few weird things about it, like it doens't like to be plugged into UPS. It prefers to be plugged into a stip of the wall.

It does lose connection occasionally (not often). The fix is to power off the scanner and turn it back on with the switch onthe back. It takes 10 seconds...MAX.

This last purchase from Amazon however the scanner on this order I received was an older version of the scanner, which leads me to believe it had been sitting in the warehouse for a long time.

 "Be very careful" 2007-10-16
By J. Michael Walker (Texas)
Be VERY careful when purchasing anything from Visioneer. I have owned a visioneer scanner for about 4 years, and when I upgraded my PC to Vista, was shocked to learn that Visioneer considers it "out of production" and therefore no new drivers are available. In short, I now own a boat anchor. If you think you might EVER upgrade your computer, you might be better off purchasing from a company who supports their equipment. By the way, I had to call a 900 number to find out that the product is no longer supported - I actually had to PAY to get ripped off.

 "Great hardware, horrible support" 2004-12-29
By Malby
I have used PaperPort/Visioneer scanners for close to a decade, and loved them all. For some reason, though, their code gets worse and worse and their "support" simply does not exist.

For some reason, in order to install a new scanner, you have to remove all vestiges (even hidden ones) of the prior scanner software and drivers. Forget installing TWO scanners (I have both a Visioneer flatbed and a Strobe XP 450).

Is it too much to ask to get support for an item that costs $650?

"Great for scanning all your albums, just so expensive" 2010-02-20
By Marc Bate
We scanned nearly 10000 photos from all of our family photo albums in 3-4 weekends (most of the time was taking them out of the album). It is fast, and scans the speed advertised. The Kodak software is very simple, as another review stated, BUT, as I learned a little too late in my project, you can use the TWAIN (or WIA) driver that also gets installed to use the scanner with virtually any other software, so you can scan a color two-sided document into Acrobat and have the text recognized, no problems. The biggest benefit of using the scanner this way is that you can set the feeder timeout value from the default 1 second that the Kodak simple software uses, to a couple minutes even. This is so helpful if you have small photos that get caught or your stack gets 'stuck' momentarily, and the Kodak software stops if that continuous stream stops from just the 1 second, and you have to click resume button on the computer, etc. It would be nice to set this in the Kodak software, but you can use the #3 smartScan preset to bring in all your photos as 300dpi JPEGs, using whatever timeout you want (I found 60 seconds so much better so you can gather your pictures and have them all be in the same 'batch').

The only downside is the cost, most likely due to lack of competition.

 "Good bulk photo scanner" 2009-12-31
By T. Markson (honolulu, hi)
I bought this scanner to scan my families photos. There are thousands of them collected over 100 years. Using a flatbed scanner is not a practical solution to this kind of problem. I found this scanner through many net searches. It is expensive - it is clearly designed for a commercial operation. But, this machine can really crank through the scans.

It is designed to take a stack of photos and quickly scan them. In this, it really succeeds. You can mix sizes, orientations, color/b&w. Even if a photo goes in angled the software will produce a good straight scan. The controls are limited - no cropping, limited edited - but for what it is designed to do, it does extremely well. You can rotate and perform a very simple retouch. I have heard that many of the bulk scanning services use this scanner. In less than one hour, I scanned a couple of hundred photos at 600dpi.

Upsides: Good quality scans at reasonable resolution very quickly with no hassle.

Downside: Expensive, software simple and is limited to bulks scanning. Requires Windows so I had to bootcamp my Mac.

 "Outstanding film/slide scanner" 2010-08-19
By Ed Oldman
The Canon CanoScan 9000F is an outstanding film/slide scanner. It also accomplishes excellent images of old photographs and old newspaper items.

I opened the shipping box, unpacked the hardware, then read the simple instructions. I installed the driver software, plugged the CanoScan into my iMac. Plugged in the power to the CanoScan, installed the slide frame and four slides, closed the door and turned on the CanoScan.

The iMac asked if it should scan.

That's it.

Spent the remaining afternoon scanning slides and then popping the superb jpeg images into the iPhoto application.

I was a really happy camper!

 "Magic CanoScan" 2010-08-17
By peterkrakonos
The CanoScan 9000F is an excellent product I have been looking for for many years. I have been trying to digitize a large collection of personal and work related slides, negatives and B&W and color photos. In the past six years I have quit the project several times because the scanners I used were not up to the task. Some of the slide/negative scanning gadgets (not inexpensive) I used simply did not deliver acceptable result. With the 9000F I am finding it a joy to get the work done. The output in my opinion is just incredible and is delivered by a scanner affordable in price for an average nonprofessional.

The 9000F is easy to install and operate (I use Windows XP system). The output is of excellent quality, thus I can focus my energy on cleaning the inputs from dust and other debris rather then being preoccupied with keeping the scanner operating. The 9000F reliably recognizes the input being scanned. Digitizing 35 mm slides and negatives with the 9000F brings the scenes to life in a way I have not seen before, except those provided by professional labs. The scanner is also very good in recognizing multiple photos being scanned at the same time. I am very happy with the product and without hesitation recommend the 9000F to anyone with large collection of slides, negatives and photos wanting/needing digital rendition of high quality. Assuming the product is durable as well (I have been using the 9000F for about three weeks very intensively, digitizing about 3000 targets so far), I will have only praise for the CanoScan 9000F.

"Great Support, but dead on arrival" 2010-08-14
By Frank O. Griffin (Houston)
To make a long story short, I ordered the 9000F as a companion to my brand-new Pixma Pro printer. The printer arrived a day before the scanner, and set up very easily. But the agony started when the 9000F arrived: I wasted almost a day trying to solve a "communications" problem between the scanner and my PC. It was an insidious problem because the scanner "partially" communicated (i.e. it was recognized and installed by Windows automatically, giving the impression that it was communicating. The "auto scan" button also communicated with the PC). Hence I thought I was close to solving the problem and spent a lot of time with Canon support trying to make it work. (By the way, I found Canon support to be excellent, if not outstanding. I used both live conversation and email while working the issue). This is not my first PC rodeo, and we tried unloading/loading drivers, updating drivers, msconfig changes, TWAIN_32 stuff, etc.

But the bottom line was that Canon eventually decided it was a defective unit, so I sent it back to Amazon. I still have a nagging suspicion that we might have missed some sort of exotic problem, but when I stepped back I realized it was unacceptable to have to spend this effort to install something this simple. Maybe it was defective, and if so, that too is unacceptable.

Since I have been a Canon SLR fan from way back, I may be crazy enough to order an 8000-series Canon scanner, for one last try. My advice to others is to spend no more than 30-60 minutes trying to solve a "communications" problem if they encounter one with a CanoScan. After an hour, box 'er up and hightail it to UPS.

 "Too Many Issues" 2010-08-13
By Michael Friedlander (California)
This is not a problem with Amazon or [...], it's a design issue.

Cannon 9000 F, Please Issue RA for refund. Product has software defects and mechanical defects which prevent scanner from operating as represented by manufacturer.

Please issue pickup date and information for return shipping.

All packaging is intact, and unit will be returned in original packaging, with all items included.

This is not a [...] problem, this is a manufacturer problem. We receive great service from [...] and will continue to order products from [...].

Software bugs: Cannon software causes names on photos to be scrambled, a photo is scanned and named, then saved. Another photo is scanned and named, then the Cannon software assigns the second photo's name to be attached to the first saved photo, and deletes the first photo's correct name. Also, there seems to be some problems with the image correction adjustments, they do not always function as claimed. Also, the unit has limited memory, which prevents larger photos from being scanned with high resolution. Cannon should have made the memory expandable.

Control Bugs: Low, medium, high OR on / off for image adjustments does not supply enough range for the fine adjustment of the photograph. I need several degrees of each adjustment (at least 10 - 20 degrees of adjustment), in order to correct images-- to just the right amount. I just don't get the range of adjustments I need with this software.

The color adjustments were the only ones that really allowed a fine setting, all the other adjustments are "course" adjustments. ALL the adjustments need to be changed to "fine" adjustments.

Mechanical Bugs: The scanner has a transport lock switch to stop the movement of the scanner transport, BUT once you unlock the transport, it cannot be locked again for shipping. This is due to a design defect.

Some of the mechanical parts are thin plastic and flimsy, I do not expect them to last without breaking.

Photoshop Elements: I need to log in with name and password every time I use the Photoshop software? What a pain! I need software that opens so I can use it, without "logging in." Bad idea!

PROS: fast warm up, would be great for scanning office documents and quick family photo use.

CONS: Poorly designed software and thin plastic parts which could break, not a great choice for an aspiring / serious photographer.

"Fabulous performer in this price range!" 2010-08-09
By Kam G. (Washington, DC)
I sold my Epson V750-M Pro to get the CanoScan 9000F instead. I'll divide my review into three categories: speed, quality, and user interface. ____ SPEED: I just couldn't get around to scanning anything with the V750 because the wait with every scan is just agonizing. It sounds like it has to rev up its engine every time. On the other hand, The speed and agility of the 9000F are impressive. I place several pictures at a time on the glass to scan, and the software lets you independently select the settings for each picture, mixing resolutions and corrections. Then it goes and scans each one separately. And because the LED light requires no warm-up time, it works immediately you can just get so much done! I scanned over 150 pictures in the first few days of having this scanner -- more than I did in the two years I had the Epson. _____ QUALITY: The V750 is a professional grade scanner (hence the almost $800 price tag) does a slightly better job with dust and scratch removal using Digital ICE. The 9000F uses FARE, which works well, but seems to not be quite as effective. Scans on the 9000F tend to be slightly more blue, but you can tweak that correction easily. ______ INTERFACE: The user interface is a bit clugey (is that how you spell it?), but it does everything it needs to, and while you're scanning a large number of pics it stores them in its own catalog until you're finished, then saves the files in one single sweep. The software seems to not retain some settings (I keep having to uncheck a box to create subfolders by scan date), but overall works very well. _____ CONCLUSION: If I had to choose on one hand between having the best scanner (V750) and never using it, and on the other hand having a great scanner (9000F) and using it like crazy, I would definitely take Option B. I highly recommend the 9000F for its beautiful design, easy setup, very good scanning quality, easy photo correction settings, ability to scan several pics at once, and impressive speed!

It is such a convenience that this unit is compatible with Mac OS & Windows. However it only support Intel-based Mac. Luckily, I am using Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Very simple and scan directly to Mac address book. Fast scanning speed and portability due to its palm size, make it easy to travel with. It recognizes 20 languages, very useful for users like me who receive different language business cards all the time, from all over the places. Highly recommend to all Mac users. I can't really provide any functionality user feedback, since once it arrived I learned it will only work with Intel-based Macs. Now I have to incur the trouble and expense of returning it. Amazon should add this important detail to the product description. So if you have a PowerPC Mac, look elsewhere.

 "Not a keeper!" 2010-04-21
By Patricia Godek (NEW YORK, NY, US)
I keep it short: the hardware doesn't feed the card thru proper, the scan comes out half black and even if it gets it thru it always appears cricked. The recognition worked surprisingly well, but the rest of the software needs much improvement! No syncing with address book (only export, changes in contacts in the software will add a duplicate rather than changing the original entry), you can make groups but can't export those to address book, too many steps involved to extract the images, no note field to add comments... nothing good to say about the software!

I sent it back and just ordered the CardScan executive for mac... hope that works better!

"NOT a scanner for companies" 2010-01-28
By Jessica Mcvea
Even though this scanner is touted as networkable, it does not work in any kind of business environment.

First, it was EXTREMELY hard to set up. I had to call in my IT guy, because the instructions do not help at all, if things don't go exactly as they should. Secondly, there are two CDs that would I have had to install on EVERY SINGLE COMPUTER in my office, even though it says I only need to install EpsonScan.

Most importantly, though, EpsonScan does not work unless it has been closed on every other computer that's networked to our internet. Imagine needing to scan something and not being allowed to until you find the one person who left the program open on their computer. That simply will not work.

So, even though it says it's networkable, and technically, it is, it's not for use for more than maybe one or two computers.

I had to return it. Cross your fingers that Amazon gives me my money back.

"A Fast and Affordable Business Scanner" 2010-01-10
By Gene P. Louie (Seattle)
I was forced to abandon my old HP Scanjet IICX after 28 years of faithful service. There were no drivers for the scanner in Windows Vista or Seven. In addition, the SCSI interface card was not supported by either of the two operating systems.

.

Forced to buy a replacement, my wife and I researched the internet for the ideal scanner. It must have the following features:

.

. . 1. It must be business grade. . . . I do not want to buy another scanner every two to three years.

. . 2. Scanning rate must be fast. . . . I hate waiting.

. . 3. Price range must be between $500-$700. . . . I do not want to mortgage my house.

. . 4. The manufacturer must be established and respectable. . . . I want updated drivers in the future.

. . 5. User evaluations must be excellent. . . . I do not want to waste my money on trash.

.

The GT-2500 met all of the above criteria. However, this did not mean that it was perfect. There were four problems.

.

1. It will only scan legal size using the automatic feeder. The scanning bed only accommodates regular size paper, 8.5 by 11.

.

2. Because the automatic feeder is hinged on the side instead of the top, scanning a book is very awkward if not impossible.

.

3. There are no drivers to make the scanner into a xerox or fax machine.

.

4. You can not specify where to save the scanned file. In other words, there is no SAVE TO.

By Mike from Northport (Northport, NY United States)
Exceeded my expectations. I operate a rather complex home office environment with both Vista and XP computers, wired and wireless. The scanner integrated in fairly smoothly and works accross this heterogenious mix of compute resources equally well. Document feeding is snappy but things get slowed a bit due to network transit times (100MBPS Eithernet). A great way to share a high preformance (in the context of home office) Scanner. I've used many HP machines for years, this is a far better solution and a solid design from Epson.

On delivery, the scanner simply didn't work. The transportation lock is a (cheap) piece of plastic that was not connected to anything inside the scanner, so turning on the power only resulted in a grinding noise and flashing error lights.

Customer support from Epson is terrible; the only option I was given was to take the faulty product to a service center nearly an hour away, which Epson could not even give me the name of. I pressed instead for a factory replacement, and was repeatedly told that because I bought from a third party, having the scanner repaired was my responsibility, whether the service center was accessible or not. I wasted a week now with this large piece of plastic in my studio, trying to schedule time out of my work week to attend to Epson's shoddy workmanship and poor engineering. I would not recommend this product to an enemy.

That having been said, Amazon.com's customer service has been exemplary, and when I was unable to get Epson to meet me halfway, I've been able to follow up with Amazon in securing a replacement. I'm holding out hope that it works, but regardless will be ill at ease having to entrust it with my professional reputation and productivity.

This scanner is wonderful. The image quality is excellent. I had friends wondering if I should spend so much on a scanner, then when they saw the images of plants I made, they said "How does it make that look so much better than life?"!

Be careful when scanning non-paper items such as plants or ceramics, the glass can be scratched (on this or any scanner). I buy clear acetate or plexiglass to put on top of the glass in such cases.

As a botanical illustrator, I find this scanner to be a great timesaver. I can scan and enlarge the parts of a plant I need to illustrate, seeing detail much better than through a microscope.

Some older images are hard to feed thru the scanner and you are limited to 4 x 6 prints. If you intend to leave the frame on for extended periods of time you will be disappointed in the quality of your pictures the longer the frame is left on. If you leave it on long enough for a short visit from family and friends to look at you will be pleased at their reactions to seeing old photos that may have not been seen for years!

When the product gives you problems, the companies phone number is long distance and know matter what option you pick, you will get the same individual (apparently the only individual who works there) and he will tell you that policy is that the warranty no longer covers the product. He will not allow you to speak with a supervisor and you will be stuck with a product that does not work. They only care about selling the product, not making sure it works and Walmart even says they are nolonger carrying there products!

     "Nice Product" 2010-06-27
    By Akihiko Itoh (CA, U.S.A.)
I know the same Photo Frame is being sold under different brand names. I picked Mustek brand as a gift for a friend of mine, knowing Mustek has been in the desktop scanner business quite sometimes and is possibly the OEM supplier. The user reviews on other brand names that I read are mixed. Some users were very happy, while others were very unhappy and even upset. So, before I wrap it up I tested it to find out its quality. I am happy to say that the test results cheered me up with the following findings.

    Pros:

It provides fast, convenient and easy scanning.

Scanned image quality on the 8" LCD display serves the purpose.

The automatic slide show at the left-top corner of the Calendar/Clock screen is an excellent feature.

    Cons:

Strange line appears on the scanned image occasionally.

Buffer memory is too small to allow the scanned image to rotate, if it is scanned at 300dpi, and the system hangs up (It does not occur at the default setting of 150 dpi).

To move from one operation to another, you cannot jump and have to exit from current operation by repeatedly pressing EXIT button. The system set-up is exempt, as the remote controller has an independent system set-up button on it.

     "Excellent large flatbed scanner" 2009-12-30
By Philip N. Nanzetta (Gaithersburg, MD USA)
We have used Epson scanners for a long time in production, so I thought I knew what to expect (only larger). I wasn't dissapointed. This is an excellent scanner. Installation and setup were fast and easy. Scanning, likewise, is easy and fast, and the quality is excellent.

"very satisfied with my Epson Expression 10000XL Graphic Arts Scanner" 2009-11-07
    By hummergrl (Los Angeles,CA,U.S.A.)
I bought the Epson Expression 10000XL Graphic Arts Scanner to archive my large format photographs from my long ago modeling years and to use it for future graphic arts projects. I have a G4 Mac with no USB port and I need to be able to use it on Photoshop 6 on an even older G4 Mac. I was concerned that this model did not have Silverfast 2 software because I read it was invaluable especially for dust removal. Well,I can report that the dust removal, sharpening, light, color adjustments and auto focus that come with the Graphic Arts model work great for my purposes and are extremely easy to use. No need to go to "scanner school" beforehand. I do the detail work later in Photoshop 6. The installation was a bit tricky because of my older Mac. It took 2 phone calls to Epson technical support (located in the Philippines). They were very friendly and patient and sent me the right installation software for my older Mac. The 300 dpi large b/w and color photos scan pretty fast, maybe two minutes for b/w, 5 min for color. The 1200 dpi color zoomed in detail scans take a long time without USB and the G4, maybe 15-20 minutes, every now and then they don't get done: It indicates: just one more minute, with my processor working at 90%, but that minute goes on forever. The quality of the scans look fine to me, 16 bit b/w and 48 bit color channels are too advanced for Photoshop 6 and I have to size them down to 8 channel b/w and color to be able to work on them. I haven't done any color graphic arts projects yet,so I can't report on that. Overall so far so good. Hopefully I'll be able to use the scanner with future Mac models in order to justify the hefty price tag.

This scanner was easy to install, set up and use. With different modes of scanning, it meets all our needs. We dont know how we did business without it.

     "Epson 10000XL" 2009-02-19
By Bill Bolz (St. John, Indiana)
I found the scanner to be packaged well and delivered safely. It worked from the second I plugged it in. One feature I like is that the cover stays open when you lift it and it expands so that thicker items can be placed on the screen. The 17" wide screen makes scanning large paintings as composites a piece of cake. I was surprised that it takes so long to scan at high resolutions though. Something I did not know when I bought it. I think I would like to have known the scanning times at various resolutions. This should be part of the tech specs on all scanners for comparisons. I scan paintings for prints in high resolution using PS-CS4 and then downsample for printing.

"Very good large format scanner" 2008-06-08
By Norm De Plume (Lake Forest, Illinois USA)
I would have given this 5 stars if it had had a page feeder. Although in my case not a necessity, still it would have been a nice feature given the price of this unit. It's EXPENSIVE!

The scanner itself does exactly what I require of it. It takes great scans of large items and offers many filter and scanning options including software that permits multiple scans without requiring one to call up the Twain driver after every scan. I have over 300 LP covers that I'd like to scan and now I can do each in one pass. It will be invaluable for me to be able to keep up with the flow of my daughter's countless larger art pieces (yes I'm a doting digital dad). The Epson XL10000 is just what the doctor ordered.

(FYI: My older Epson Perfection series scanner came with software to permit multiple scans when installed on an XP box, but on my new Vista box, this feature is no longer supported by Epson. I did manage to find software to enable multiple scans. Since I'm on the XP box at the moment and not on the Vista box, I don't recall the software product name, but think it might have been something like Smart Scan.)

Epson makes great (if overpriced) scanners and printers. I've never had a problem with any Epson device in the 20 years I've been using them.

If you need the size and can afford the cost of admission, this is your ticket to great large format scans.

     "White Lines" 2010-05-22
    By Susan Dynarski
Pros: compact, inexpensive, fairly easy to use

Cons: Scan quality is terrible. It worked well for the first batch I scanned, but now the dreaded white lines have appeared and will not go away, no matter how many times I clean and recalibrate this sucker.

"Would not buy this scanner" 2010-04-24
    By Steven J. Pegg
I just received the scanner and scanned about 40 pictures. The scanner was easy to use. However, I had the lines in all the pictures and the scanned image was darker than the original. The originals did not have lines before being scanned, after running it through the scanner, I could see light lines on the original. I would not purchase this scanner. I am currently in the process of returning it.

     "Piece of junk" 2010-01-18
    By Dawn Y. Leggett (Illinois)
I loved this when I first got it. I love the speed. However, as other reviewers have stated there are frequent white lines. My biggest complaint is I used it heavily the first 2 weeks I got it. Then it sat for several months and when I went to use it it wouldn't even turn on. Since the warranty is only 90 days it's not covered by warranty. Regardless though, when I emailed the manufacture they couldn't even respond to my email. Poor product from a company with even poorer customer service. Save your money and don't buy.

     "Does a poor job" 2010-01-09
    By Biotexts2 (Wilmington DE)
This was a Xmas present, I had wanted a small, simple scanner but one with better resolution than my 600 dpi Lexmark all-in-one X2600 desktop unit. I finally got it out today and have spent a couple of hours playing with it. I cannot recommend this for anyone interested in making scanned images of high quality. The function is very delicate and it is very easy for the auto feed to be disturbed. The image from my scans seemed fuzzy, so I scanned the same images on my Lexmark and that produced a better image! I tried cleaning the Pandigital unit and photos were no better. The literature says images are saved as 'ultra high resolution' 1800 x 1200 jpgs. There are absolutely no settings with the scanner or software to select levels, only as to where photos are sent on your PC. So I guess I was scanning at the highest level, but the photos were fuzzy and when blown up in Photoshop, there were far fewer pixels and detail than from the Lexmark. It's going back in the box and back to the vendor tomorrow if my relative saved her receipt. Otherwise, we are out the $$. I am still looking for a small, portable photo scanner to take around to the relatives to get what I want from their photo albums. Don't waste your money on this little scanner.

"Do not buy!!! Piece of junk!" 2009-12-25
    By Zedo (DC, USA)
This thing is a complete ripoff! The scan quality is extremely poor (think mid-90s technology), even without the frequent white lines that appear on the images. Not only that, but they neglect to inform you that you need to put EVERY picture in a flimsy plastic shield for each scan in order to get "high quality" results - this negates much of the advertised ease of use and speed of being able to feed one picture in after the next. Not only that, you can't scan directly to the computer! You HAVE to use the memory card provided, which is TINY (556mb)! Should you want to scan more than a few pictures you would have to buy a much larger capacity memory card. What a rip off. Don't waste your money on this scam.
