"Defective hardware or driver, will be returning it" 2010-06-30
By Randall Oelerich (Duluth, MN United States)
FedEx just delivered this scanner to my home, I installed the driver and software off the CD, then rebooted, plugged the scanner into the PC and power outlet. All seemed to be going well until I actually scanned a document. A translucent black bar several inches wide appears the entire length of the scanned document, right down the middle and about two inches on either side. This tells me this hardware is defective or it just does not work with Windows 7. What a disappointment, I was really looking forward to a large format scanner at this price. Now I have to box it up and return it. I did contact Mustek Tech support, horrible phone line connection, obvious non-English speaker at the other end of the phone made it even worse, and they had me send them a copy of the scanned document showing the black bar down the middle, said the would get back to me-- I had to press them for 'within an hour-- so I can know and make the decision to return this scanner, which I will do, unless I get an email in the next hour with a software solution. But at this point it seems like defective hardware.

 "highly Recommended!!!!" 2010-06-27
By Christopher (NY USA)
I've been searching, tediously for a wide format scanner for over a year and the cheapest I could find that worked with Windows 7 was and an Epson for $1,047. And Honestly I couldn't afford that. I'm a freelance cartoonist who works on large sized Bristol. I gave up hope and desided to save some money to purchase that Epson in a few months.

Then out of nowhere Mustek comes out with an upgrade to their old wide format scanner. For only [...] bucks, I was in awe to see its specs and price. I ordered it right away, almost not thinking twice. The Software is a bit confusing, but if you worked with any kind of scanner in the past it isn't impossible to grow accustom to. It looks nice and isn't an eye sore as a lot of others were. But more importantly was the quality of scanning. I took out an old comic page and scanned it as soon as I had it connected and the software was installed.

The only thing I am a little disappointed in was that you can't select the DPI specifically. It has 3 settings, "Normal" "Fine" and "Very Fine. I'm assuming very fine is the 2400 DPI that was listed on its specs. Honestly that's my only complaint as of now... I had it for going on one week and I'm very pleased with it.

Once you have the software completely installed, you don't even need to open up the program when you want to scan. You simply have to open the scanners lid and PRESTO! The program automatically loads on screen. It scans pretty quickly as well, my pages are highly detailed with hatching and values, it takes roughly 30 seconds per page and all I have to do it load it into Photoshop and touch it up a little as I always to with any scan and the image is perfect. It also has some sound effects that remind me of a lot about Samsung Products, You know it has a retro sounding NES feel to it, which I personally like and think it an interesting touch.

I give this a 4/5 because... The DPI settings is a little confusing, the physical frame is a little delicate frame and because I rarely give out 5's. But I'd rather save the 700 - 1500 bucks and get this then a 5 star Epson. I haven't heard much of Mustek and this is my first product of theirs, but as far as I can see it's a very promising company which made a promising product that saved me a butt load of cash. And this Artist recommends it, especially for you comic artist out there looking for a cheap but good big boy scanner.

 "A SOMEWHAT COMPETENT SCANNER" 2010-06-12
By Robert M. (San Francisco Bay area)
I've owned several scanners over the last 20 years. I bought this particular scanner via Amazon because I wanted something that will handle a full size book conveniently.

As far as scanning goes, this does a very nice job. It's reasonably quick, and with an optical resolution of 2400, this machine will do a credible job of just about anything you care to scan. As I'd hoped, the large platen allows me to lay out a full size book and capture both pages at once. It will scan in full size pages of sheet music without requiring you to stitch together images made with multiple scans of different parts of the page. I've also scanned the cover art from DVD's, and have been pleased with the results.

Mustek's downfall is their choice of software that comes included with the equipment. The programs for scanning have a limited utility, cannot make full use of the scanner's capabilities, and are so poorly documented it's nearly impossible to store your images in any location other than the default "My Pictures".

Worst of all, I haven't been able to locate a driver that works with the older Windows XP operating system. Technical Support at Mustek were unable/unwilling to help me. I was told there was no driver available for this model that is compatible with Windows XP, and that they have no plans to create one.

The driver did install correctly on my Vista laptop. But that machine has less power and memory than my older, XP desktop.

I just downloaded the driver for the A3 USB 1200, and plan on trying to install that, then hack into the registry to manually change the values that differ between the two models.

If you're looking for a large format scanner to use with Windows XP, either look elsewhere than at Mustek, or stick with their lower priced, ScanExpress A3 USB 1200 model.
